Image restoration and quality judgement of

underwater images

Abstract
Range gated pulsed laser imaging system is used to obtain underwater
images .Due to the scattering and absorption of the in-water particles, the
obtained image is prone to noise , blur and other degradations. Image
restoration and quality judgement is important for many civilian and military
applications like target detection, search and rescue, diver visibility etc in
underwater. Thus we go for blind deconvolution of image restoration
method based on Well’s small angle approximation theory inorder to restore
the degraded underwater image to a better level. After restoration, the image
quality judgement has to be done. In case of underwater, there is no
reference imaging environment. Thus we make use of blur metric method to
determine the appropriate deconvolution iteration time, so that the image
resoration result is evaluated .Therefore a better image is restored.
