Chapter 14 Vocabulary

Groundwater: precipitation that infiltrates the ground and percolates downward through
spaces in soil, gravel, and rock

Zone of saturation: spaces in soil, gravel, and rock that are close to the earths surface
and are completely filled with water.

Water Table: Top of a zone. It falls in dry weather or when we remove ground water
faster than it is replenished and it rises in wet weather.

Natural Recharge: A natural System that replenishes aquifers

Surface Water: The freshwater that flows across the earth’s surface and into rivers,
streams, lakes, reservoirs, ponds, wetlands, and estuaries.

Watershed/ Drainage Basin: The land from which surface water drains into a river,
lake, wetland, or other body of water.

Reliable Runoff: The amount of surface runoff that we can generally count on as a stable
source of freshwater from year to year.

Withdrawal: Total amount of freshwater we remove from a river, lake, or aquifer for
any purpose.

Desalination: Desalting involves removing dissolved salt for ocean water or from
brackish water in aquifers or lakes for domestic use.
