English
Read the following passage and answer the questions .

This is the period of information blast in a world that has shriveled to drawing room proportions. In a
period of information blast, everything is as close as you want it to be. The communication revolt has
made its consequence on the world of sports too. Now the fax machines and computers have made it
that if Stefan Edberg suffers a shock at Wimbledon at 1.30 am the news can comfortably make the
morning papers in New Delhi. Nowadays the media-specially TV and the press focus on sport persons
has turned the best of them into national champion, international celebrities. There were days when top
players walked out of tournament sites to neighborhood markets for a window-shopping after matches or
events. In the present day Ramesh Krishnas, Kapil Devs and Ashwini Nachappas cannot bare such a
freedom they would be crowded at every turn, whether it is New Delhi, or Lords or Beijing, certainly, the
information explosion generated by the media addiction with sports persons has been both a motivation
and a nuisance for the celebrities of sports. On the other hand the media, influence has changed them
more profitable, and therefore greatly richer-with all the approvals and the rewarding agreements– than
they would have been otherwise; the steady glower has also put massive heaviness on the best of them.
Tennis fan of the 50s or 60s would hardly know the name of Rod Laver’s wife. Now any 12 or 13 year old
seems to be able to tell you the name of Stefan Edberg’s girl friend. This is just one example. There are
hundreds of others in the world of sport. In such cases, where the information. If you can call it that – has
nothing to do with a player’s game or even the player can take the media shelter behind the public’s right
to know? Is that right absolute? If one’s right to swing his arms ends where the other’s nose begins, then
doesn’t the right of the media to inform and that of the public to be informed end where the sports
person’s private life begins? Isn’t there row between journalistic license and licentious journalism in the
sports columns? There is, certainly, no effort at portentous sermonizing here but merely an attempt to
see whether there is a sense of consciousness in a segment of the sports press of the tasks that go with
absolute sovereignty to notify.

Let C. P of 1 liter milk be Re 1.
Then S.P of 1 liter mixture=Re 1.
Gain=2%
C.P of 1 liter mixture =Re(100/120)(1) = Re 5/6.
C.P of 1 liter milk Re 1
C.P of 1 liter of water 0
Mean Price 5/6.
Ratio of milk to water =5/6 : 1/6
=5:1
Hence percentage of water in the mixture=(1/6)100=16.67%.

22)Sol:
Let the price of the mixed variety be Rs x per Kg.
Cost of 1 Kg of type 1 rice Rs 15
Cost of 1 Kg of type 2 rice Rs 20
Mean Price Rs x
20-x : x-15
(20-x) /( x-15) = 3/2
=>x=17

23)Sol:
Average salary of laborer Rs 56
Average salary of supervisors Rs 400
Average salary of entire staff Rs 60.
Number of laborer / Number of Supervisors = 340 / 4
=85/1
Thus,if the number of supervisors is 1,number of laborers =85.
Therefore if the number of supervisors is 10, then the number of laborers 85*10=850.

24)Sol:
Amount of milk left after 3 operations = 30(1-2/30)^3 lit
25)Sol:
S.P.=Rs.30per kg
Gain=10%.
M.P.=Rs.(30*100)/110 =Rs.300/11
Now, (C.P of Dearer - Mean Price) /(Mean Price - C.P of Cheaper).
= [30-300/11]/ [300/11- 25]
= 30/25
= 6/5.
Quantity of cheaper tea=6/5(30)=36kg.

26)Sol:
In 3 days, 3/15 + 1/30 + 1/10 = 1/3
i.e. 1/3 of the work is done by Sam,Bob and Kim.
The whole job will be finished by them in 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1.
i.e. 3days +3days + 3days = 9 days.

27)Sol:
(A+B+C)'s one day work = 1/30 + 1/30 + 1/60 = 5/60 =1/12
work can be finished in 12 days.

28)Sol:
Two days work done by A and B = (1/7 + 1/9)
=16/63
8 days work done by A and B = 4*(16/63)
=64/63
Now 1/63 of the work has exceeded which must have been done by B on 8th day.
Time taken by B to finish 1/63 of the work is (9)(1/63) = 1/7 of a day.
Number of days in which the work is finished = (8- 1/7)days = 7 + 6/7 days.

29)Sol:
Book read on first day = 3/8.
Remaining book to be read =5/8.
Book read on the second day= (4/5)(5/8) = 1/2.
Remaining book to be read =5/8– 1/2 =1/8.
1/8 of the book contains 30 pages,
the book contains 240 pages.

30)Sol:2/3 hour = (1/3)(60)min = 20 min.

'J' jobs in 'M' minutes , then in 20 min.,
the no. of jobs are 20J/M.

31)Sol:
In one hour, 30/5 + 48/6 = 6+8 = 14 pages are typed.
To type 100 pages, it will take (1/14)(100)= (7+1/7) hrs.

32)Sol:
Three day's work = 1/7 + 1/8 +1/6
=73/168.
six day's work = 2(73/168) = 73/84.
Seventh day work = 1/7 done by the Ram.
Since 73/84 + 1/7 = 85/84 >1,
therefore Ram working on the last day.

33)Sol:
No. of regular working hours during 4 weeks
= 4*5*6 =120.
Amount paid for regular working hours
=120*6
=720.
Now, balance of Rs. 896-720 = 176 was paid as overtime , Rs.8 per hour for 22 hrs.

34)Sol:
25 men can reap a field in 20 days.
=> 1 man can reap the field in 20*25 days = 30days.
Let 15 men leave the field after x days, so that the remaining 10 men
can complete the work in the field in 30 days.
Therefore , 25x+10*30=500
=>x=8 days.
15 men must leave the work after 5 days.

35)Sol:
1m+3w+4b in 96hrs.-------(1)
2m+8b in 80 hrs.-----------(2)
=>1m+4b in 160 hrs.------(3)
2m + 3w in 120 hrs.-------(4)
From (1) and (3)
3w do the work in [160*96] /[160-96] = 240 hrs.----(5)
From (4) and (5),
2m do the work in [240*120]/[240-120] = 240 hrs---(6).
5m do the work in 240(2/5) = 96hrs.----(7)
From (2) and (6),
8b do the work in [80*240]/[240-80] = 120 hrs.------(8)
From (7) and (8),
5m+12b do the work in [96*80]/[96+80]= 43+ 7/11 hrs.

36)Sol:
10 men can finish a piece of work in 12 days.
=>15 men do the work in [10*12]/15 =8days.
12women finish the work in 14 days.
6 women do the work in 12*14/6 = 28 days.
15 men +6 women do the work in [8*28]/[8+28] = 6days.

37)Sol:
Suppose B does the work in x days.
Then, A does 1/2work in 3x/8 days.
A does 1 work in 3x/4 days.
A+B do the work in x(3x/4)]/[x+3x/4] = 18(from the given data)
=>x=168 days.
B do the work in 168 days.

38)Sol:
Let the sum be equal to LCM of 20 and 28 i.e. 140.
Then A gets 140/20 = Rs7/day.
And B gets 140/28 = Rs5/day.
A+B get 7+5 = Rs.12/day.
Rs. 140 is sufficient for 140/12 = 11 days to pay both of them.
(OR)
Number of days = Multiplication of no. of days/Addition of no. of days.
=[20*28]/[20+28] = 11days.

39)Sol:
(A+B)'s work in 2 days = 1/9 + 1/12 = 7/36.
In 5 pairs of days they will complete 7*5/36 = 35/36.
That is,after 5*2 =10 days,
1 – (35/36) = 1/36 work is left which will be done by A alone.
A does 1 work in 9 days.
A does 1/36 work in 9(1/36) = 0.25days.
Total number of days = 10+1/4days.

40)Sol:
Two days work done by A and B=(1/10 + 1/12) = 11/60.
10 days work done by both = 5(11/60) = 11/12.
Now 1/12 of the work remains which A will do in 10(1/12) of a day= 5/6 of a day.
The work will be finished in 10(5/6) days.

41)Sol:
A can finish the work in 15*8 = 120 hrs and B can finish it in (6+ 2/3)(9) = 60hrs.
(A+B)'s 1 hour work = 1/120 + 1/60
=1/40 of the work.
A+B can finish it in 40 hrs or 40/10 = 4 days.

42)Sol:
Suppose it require x hours to manufacturer the tool now.
Previously it took (x+1) hrs to manufacturer the same tool.
26(x+1)=28x
=>26=2x
=>x=13.

43)SOL:
Profit ratio of A,B AND C is
(5000*6) : (5000*5) : (6000*10)
=> 30 : 25 : 60
=> 6 : 5 : 12
C's share = (12/23)(5000) = Rs.2608.69.

44)Sol:
Let the original number of workers in the group be 'x'
Therefore, actual number of workers = x-5.
We know that the number of man hours required to do the job is the same in both the cases.
Therefore, x (20) = (x-5).30
x = 15.
Therefore, the actual number of workers who worked to complete the job = x - 5 = 15-5=20.

45)Sol:
(A+B)’s 2 hours work when opened alternatively =1/6+1/4 =5/12
(A+B)’s 4 hours work when opened alternatively=10/12=5/6
Remaining part=1 -5/6=1/6.
Now, it is A’s turn and 1/6 part is filled by A in 1 hour.
So, total time taken to fill the tank=(4+1)= 5 hours.

46)Sol:
Suppose, first pipe take x hours to fill the tank then
B & C will take (x-5) and (x-9) hours respectively.
Therefore, 1/x +1/(x-5) =1/(x-9)
On solving, x=15
Hence, time required by first pipe is 15 hours.

47)Sol:
Part filled by (A+B) in 1 min=(1/60 +1/40)=1/24
Suppose the tank is filled in x minutes
Then, x/2(1/24+1/40)=1
=> (x/2)*(1/15)=1
=> x=30 min.

48)Sol:
Work done by the two pipes in 1 hour= 1/4+1/6=10/24
Time taken by these two pipes to fill the tank=24/10 hrs.
Due to leakage, time taken = 2 hrs 28 min+ 32 min= 3 hours
Therefore, work done by (two pipes + leak) in 1 hr= 1/3
work done by leak n 1 hour=10/24 -1/3=1/12
Leak will empty full cistern in 12 hours.
