Transmission Media

Transmission media enables computers to

send and receive messages.

TWISTED PAIR CABLE
Least expensive and widely used
Consists of two copper wires arranged in regular
spiral pattern.
Can transmit both analog and digital.
Most commonly used medium in telephone
network.
Types:

UNSHIELDED TWISTED PAIR (UTP)

SHIELDED TWISTED PAIR (STP) CABLE

Advantages Disadvantages

 Well understood technology  Susceptible to noise

 Easy to add computers  L imited maximum
bandwidth
 Less Expensive  Easier to tap
 Requires expensive
electronic devices

Coaxial Cable
Coaxial cable has 4 concentric sections:
Inner copper or aluminum conductor
 Protecti
ve Plastic, foam, or air insulation
plastic Cylindrical aluminum or copper shield (e.g.,
coating braided wire mesh) acting as outer conductor
Outer jacket that physically protects cable

Advantages Disadvantages

 Higher distance covered  Limited distance and

 Low maintenance cost topology
 Simple to install  Low security, easily tapped
 Difficult to make major
changes in the cabling
 Cabling cost higher
Optical Fiber
 Optical fiber consists of a glass core, surrounded by a
glass cladding with slightly lower refractive index.

 Thefiber optic cable is often found in backbone

networks because its bandwidth is cost effective.

 Used in TV companies.
Advantages Disadvantages

 High bit rates  More expense in cabling

 Lower transmission loss  Requires skilled installation
over longer distance  High instalation cost
 No interference
 Support voice, data,video
 Difficult to tap
