Pronoun reference error

INCORRECT: “Jeanne and Gertrude went to the mall, but she
couldn’t find any outfits that she liked.”

Pronoun number error

Adver tis e Her e
INCORRECT: “The average waiter expects a 15% tip from a
restaurant patron, and they are usually disappointed.”

A pronoun must:

• agree with its antecedent

• refer to a specific antecedent without
ambiguity
• Remember: that is singular and those is
plural

Misplaced Modifiers

INCORRECT:
“Coming out of the shopping mall, Joan’s purse was stolen.”

• 2 ways to fix this misplaced modifier:

• Change 2nd half of sentence.

• Change first half of sentence into adverbial clause, which contains its
own subject.

Parallel Construction
• Series of actions set off by commas.

• Spot these problems by finding a series of actions, lists, or sentences

divided into parts. Make sure that each list item has similar structure
(i.e., no one part of
the list is distinct from the others in terms of grammatical construction
or length.

Compare

Compare to compares UNLIKE things, whereas compare with

compares LIKE things. Compare to is used to stress resemblance.

“She compared the evening gown to the cocktail dress. “

Compare with can be used to show either similarity or difference

(usually difference).

“When compared with Laura’s work product, Jim’s showed a world of

difference.”

Each
Each is usually singular. But when each follows a plural subject, the
verb and subsequent pronouns remain in the plural.

“Three cats each chase birds.”

“Three cats, each of which chases birds….”

Due to

The best meaning for due to is “caused by.”

• Due to should not be used to mean “on account of.”

INCORRECT: “The game was postponed due to rain.”

“The game was postponed on account of rain.”

“The game’s postponement was due to rain.”

So as to

Use So + ADJECTIVE + as to + VERB

CORRECT: “Her debts are so extreme as to threaten her company.”

• Do not use it to substitute for “in order to”

INCORRECT: “He exercises everyday so as to build his stamina.”

Number

• A number of always takes plural verbs.

“A number of birds have migrated…”
• The number of always takes singular verbs.
The number of warblers has increased…”

Adventure is worthwhile!
