CRIME INCIDENTS AND TOURISM

Tourism and crime are not good bed partners. Why? What are the impacts of crime that
affect tourism industry? Our country was alive with many possibilities but crime is pulling these
down. The headlines are shocking and depressing. On streets you can witness it yourselves. Have
you wonder what are the reactions of the foreigners who might see it on the television?

Let me share you a story of mine. I have this Japanese friend who likes to travel but I was
shocked when he told me that he doesn’t want to go in the Philippines. And of course I ask him
why? He straightly answered, “Filipinos that I know are great but I am afraid of what I’ve seen
in the news.” I didn’t find any word to say. I feel bad because they think that way.

Same through with the recent hostage drama incident, so I bet you all heard about what
happened. Are you in favor of what Mendoza did? Of course not. Tourists are falling victim to
the heinous crime. They shouldn’t be treated that way. A country with high rate of crime is likely
to attract less tourists because they would be concerned about their security.

Whenever there is more crime in society, People in other countries will get bad image
about that country. These People include Tourists who keep on visiting different countries and
thus are a big source of bringing foreign exchange to country. When tourists feel that a particular
country is getting unsafe because of gaining crime rate, they don't feel going there for their
safety. And without tourists, Tourism cannot flourish in a country not only becoming reason of
low foreign reserves but also loss of so many Jobs associated with it and the Economic push it
gives to a country.

We, as countrymen should get used to it. We should know how to prevent crimes from
happening. I wish the government will take their part in doing actions. We should prove that
Philippines is the best place to be.
