SECTION A - READING I. Read the following passage carefully: (10 marks) CATS AND DOGS 1. intend to speak my mind on cats and dogs. Both these species have sponged on humans for ages as pets. 2. Idon’t know how people tolerate cats. They are so supercilious that they make you feel inferior and their only intention is to have a nice time at your expense without ever doing you a good turn. And if you think all those mice it makes mincemeat of were part of its desire to repay the favour to you, forget it. A cat never does anything at your bidding, It catches mice because it wants to, not, because you wanted it to do that! 3. A catis also an expert thief and takes delight in spoiling everything in your home. No matter how much you feed it, the kitchen regularly gets invaded and no matter how much you fondle it, precious china and glass would continue to be upset. And if you catch it during its stealthy invasion, thus necessitating its retreat, you won't find it repentant 4, Not for its cowering; in fact, it removes itself to a safe distance and with a hard glint of disapproval in its eyes it looks at you as if you were the worst nuisance it has come across. It might also scratch you on the sly, tear your beautiful curtains or worse still, might dirty your kitchen and dining hall. And you thought it should be grateful for all the delicacies you had plied it with? ‘Well my friend, gratitude is one thing that a cat is not known for 5. I dislike the dog for exactly the opposite reason. It makes you feel superior. Cats do not go in for servility, but every dog is a servant; it makes even a half- wit fee! like a King Solomon with its vigorous tail-wag, Itis faithful. Itis said that a dog is man’s most uncritical friend. But then shouldn’t a true friend be critical in private, making you aware of your foibles? A dog lives its life on the principle that it exists to please its master. So to impress the master it sometimes indulges in the most embarrassing slavish spectacles. Thus it barks unnecessarily at absolutely innocuous visitors, licks your feet, tries to stand on its hind-legs and gambols around for no apparent reason, 6. Cats and dogs are not similar except in the way they rob you sleep at night. Cats indulge in nocturnal brawls. Similarly dogs break out barking in the middle of the night or suddenly turn musical and play long notes, Both ways your beauty sleep is murdered and you cannot do a thing about it 7. In pets [look for normal friends who afford you hours of pleasure in their company. I do not want to lord over nor do I relish bossing over anyone. 1) On the basis of your reading, answer the following questions: (Sx1=5 marks) 8) According to the writer, cats make you feel____—_——_—_-whereas dogs can make you feel b) Although your cat is well fed, it regularly __ the kitchen and your china and glass ©) The quality the writer single word) 4) Mention two ways in which a dog tries to impress his master. ©) Which is the one similarity between cats and dogs?
