Thermal monitoring * In thermal monitoring, the temperature of the equipment is constantly checked to see if there is no variance according to industry norms. * The temperature measurement helps to protect the equipment from failure due to change in temperatures. * Equipments fallings outside the temperature range requires are due for maintenance. Temperature changes can indicate: * excessive mechanical friction e.g. faulty bearings * degraded heat transfer e.g. fouling in heat exchanger * poor electrical connections e.g. corroded connections Method Description Application Point temperature Usually a thermocouple or platinum resistant thermometer is used Can be used on nearly all surfaces Area pyrometer Measures the emitted infra red radiation from a surface. Often with a laser sight or IR sensors. Very good for walk around temperature check. Temperature paint/stickers Chemical indicators calibrated to change temperature at specific temperatures. Great for inspection rounds. Thermography Hand held video camera sensitive to emitted infra red Provides the ultimate, high resolution picture
