SUMMARY

Install, setup, and monitor local area network (LAN). Perform a variety of maint
enance, evaluation, installation, and training tasks to ensure LAN performance m
eets company and user requirements.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Administer network workstations, utilizing one or more TCP/IP or non-TCP/IP netw
orking protocols and/or one or more UNIX-based or non-UNIX based operating syste
ms.
Evaluate and/or recommend purchases of computers, network hardware, peripheral e
quipment, and software;
Investigate user problems, identify their source, determine possible solutions,
test and implement solutions.
Install, configure, and maintain personal computers, Novell networks, UNIX works
tations, file servers, ethernet networks, network cabling, and other related equ
ipment, devices, and systems; adds or upgrades and configures modems, disk drive
s, data acquisition boards, CD ROM units, printers, and related equipment.
Perform and/or oversee software and application development, installation, and u
pgrades.
Maintain site licenses for department/organization.
Plan and implement network security, including building firewalls, applying cryp
tography to network applications, managing host security, file permissions, back
up and disaster recovery plans, file system integrity, and adding and deleting u
sers.
Troubleshoot networks, systems, and applications to identify and correct malfunc
tions and other operational difficulties.
Develop and conduct various training and instruction for system users on operati
ng systems, relational databases, and other applications; assist users in maximi
zing use of networks and computing systems.
Identify utilization patterns and their effect on operation/system availability
and performance expectations.
Anticipate communication and networking problems and implement preventive measur
es.
Establish and perform maintenance programs following company and vendor standard
s.
Ensure timely user notification of maintenance requirements and effects on syste
m availability.
Investigate, recommend and install enhancements and operating procedures that op
timize network availability.
Maintain confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored
or accessed by the network.
Document network problems and resolutions for future reference.
Other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist personnel of other departments as a computer resource.
Provide on-the-job training to new department staff members.
Provide computer orientation to new company staff.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS


Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required. This is normally acquire
d through a high school diploma or equivalent.
Knowledge of a range of computer networking systems and languages to include UNI
X, Novell, VMS, or similar computer networks. Knowledge of computing and network
hardware and peripheral equipment. Ability to communicate technical information
to non-technical personnel. Ability to install, configure, and maintain persona
l computers, networks, and related hardware and software. Knowledge of federal c
opyright laws as they pertain to the use of computer software. Knowledge of comp
uter and/or network security systems, applications, procedures, and techniques.
Ability to identify and resolve computer system malfunctions and operational pro
blems. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Ability to pro
vide technical training to end users. Ability to learn and support new systems a
nd applications. Work with users requires interpersonal skills. This is normally
acquired through a combination of a Bachelor's Degree and three to five years o
f networking experience.
Responsibilities may require evening and weekend work in response to needs of th
e systems being supported.

Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work requires extensive

JOB SUMMARY:
As a key member of Advancement Services, this position is responsible for all as
pects of network administration including servers, desktop systems, communicatio
ns hardware/software and office systems.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS:
This position reports to the Director of Advancement Services and periodically w
orks with all development staff.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Network administration (including backup, security management, user account mana
gement, e-mail systems including e-mail web server, internet access, office syst
ems and applications support).
Supports server, network and desktop hardware, software and applications.
Performs technology needs analysis.
Rolls out hardware and software to ensure optimal deployment of resources.
Plans, implements, and supports the network and computing infrastructure plan.
Manages small to medium sized projects according to agreed upon budgets and sche
dules.
Assists with technology planning through ongoing research.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Diploma in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or Business Administ
ration; supplemented with one or more courses in current technology.
Experience:
Considerable (5 years) and current experience as an Administrator on a medium si
zed network of servers, desktop systems and communications devices using current
technologies.
Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of Windows servers and desktop products.
Demonstrated knowledge of setting up remote access for users.
Demonstrated ability to administer a 250+ node network including firewalls.
Demonstrated ability to support networked printers and photocopiers.
Demonstrated working knowledge of current communications devices and protocols,
server and desktop technologies.
Orientation and training of new staff.
Ability to negotiate hardware/software service and technical support contracts w
ith vendors.
Ability to manage multiple projects, activities and tasks simultaneously.
Supervising, coaching, and mentoring of network services assistant position.
Facilitation and change management skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The System Administrator (SA) is responsible for effective provisioning, install
ation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software
and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research
and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. This
individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, an
d related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers
, and Partners.
This individual will assist project teams with technical issues in the Initiatio
n and Planning phases of our standard Project Management Methodology. These acti
vities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; resear
ch & development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis and design; a
nd support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutio
ns. Participation on projects is focused on smoothing the transition of projects
from development staff to production staff by performing operations activities
within the project life-cycle.
This individual is accountable for the following systems: Linux and Windows syst
ems that support GIS infrastructure; Linux, Windows and Application systems that
support Asset Management; Responsibilities on these systems include SA engineer
ing and provisioning, operations and support, maintenance and research and devel
opment to ensure continual innovation.
SA Engineering and Provisioning
1. Engineering of SA-related solutions for various project and operational needs
.
2. Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, s
ervices, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and p
roject/operational requirements.
3. Install and configure systems such as supports GIS infrastructure application
s or Asset Management applications.
4. Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
5. Contribute to and maintain system standards.
6. Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches fo
r system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources
and provide economies of scale.
Operations and Support
7. Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of
all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and
application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
8. Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
9. Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and syste
m data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or di
sks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
10. Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
11. Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
12. Provide Tier III/other support per request from various constituencies. Inv
estigate and troubleshoot issues.
13. Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and commu
nicate with impacted constituencies.
Maintenance
14. Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative
tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
15. Upgrade and configure system software that supports GIS infrastructure appli
cations or Asset Management applications per project or operational needs.
16. Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
17. Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
18. Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimiza
tion as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
19. Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
1. Bachelor (4-year) degree, with a technical major, such as engineering or comp
uter science.
2. Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in Unix and Microsoft.
3. Four to six years system administration experience.
COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
1. Position deals with a variety of problems and sometime has to decide which an
swer is best. The question/issues are typically clear and requires determination
of which answer (from a few choices) is the best.
DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
1. Decisions normally have a noticeable effect department-wide and company-wide,
and judgment errors can typically require one to two weeks to correct or revers
e.
RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
1. Functions as a lead worker doing the work similar to those in the work unit;
responsibility for training, instruction, setting the work pace, and possibly ev
aluating performance.
