Suchitoto is a náhuatl Word that means "Bird-
Flower“. Most historians are agree that the first
Spanish settlement near Suchitoto was made in el
Valle de La Bermuda , located to the northeast of
the municipality
.
The founding of Suchitoto is
attributed to the Pipiles, who
settled in the present Salvadoran
territory of Cuscatlán halfway
through the 11th century and were
one of the most veteran indigenous
tribes that fought against the
Spanish conquistadors in the
beginning of the 17 th century.
Annual Cultural Traditions
More than just a
colonial town with
great beauty and
architecture, Suchitoto
is home to a wide
variety of artistic and
cultural expressions. In
addition to hosting
events through out the
year, here also celebrate
many annual festivals
and traditions.

Each weekend the Artisan Market allows you to
discover the rich variety of crafts that are produced
in El Salvador, including hammocks, jewelry,
clothing and fabrics, pottery, wines, and much more.
Parade of Torches and Costumes -
September

To inaugurate the
celebrations of
Independence Day, each
year the students from the
Instituto Nacional de
Suchitoto present a
fantastic nighttime parade
with music, dance, and
costumed representations
of traditions and legends
of Suchitoto and El
Salvador.
Festival of Corn: Giving Thanks for the Harvest -
August

Here is celebrated the beginning


of the harvest of corn. Activities
include a religious procession, a
special mass in the church, food
stands that sell a wide variety of
foods and drinks made from
corn and the presentation of the
Kings and Queens of Corn, who
adorn themselves in outfits
made with corn.
National Pupusa Day - November
The
pupusa is the food most associated with El Salvador
and on this day they celebrate its role in the daily life
of our country. Here you can eat all the pupusas that
you can!
