Experimental study of heat transfer enhancement

in a simple heat exchanger

Heat exchanger
 A heat exchanger is a device built for
efficient heat transfer from one medium to
another.
 The media may be separated by a solid wall,
so that they never mix, or they may be in
direct contact.

Applications
space heating
refrigeration
air conditioning
power plants
chemical plants
petrochemical plants
petroleum refineries
natural gas processing
sewage treatment
One common example of a heat
exchanger is the radiator in a car, in
which the heat source, being a hot
engine-cooling fluid, water, transfers
heat to air flowing through the
radiator (i.e. the heat transfer
medium).
Primary requirements
 Copper tube (Inner dia=15mm, thickness=1.5 mm,
length=40 cm)
 Pump, 2 nos (provision for varying flow rate)
 Measuring flask
 Piping arrangement
 PVC pipe (Inner dia=40mm, thickness=1.5 mm,
length=40 cm)
 Thermocouple ( minimum 6 nos)
 Heater ( for creating hot water)
 Container for heating water
 Digital multimeter (measuring o/p of thermocouple)
 Insulation material to cover PVC pipe
Secondary requirements
 Fins made of copper sheet
(5cm X 1.2cm X 2mm, 42 nos)
 Plumbing solder (for attaching fin)
Secondary requirements
 Twisted strip

 Spiraled rod (3mm dia stainless steel rod with

small pins attached
