Problem 6.1 Delivery of an antique furniture.

A valuable antique furniture, manufactured in 1907 by Gustav Stickley, is

transported in a truck. It weighs 1400N. To lift it from the ground to the truck,
which is 1.0m high, the chargers must decide what to do. Should the lift be in
a straight line or should it be pushed on its ramp that is 4.0m long? Suppose
they push it on a mover’s dolly (plataforma rodante), which in a simplified
model, it’s equivalent to slide it up in a ramp without friction.

a) find the work of the chargers on the furniture, if they rise it 1.0m in a
straight line at a constant speed.
R: 1400J

b) find the work of the chargers on the furniture if they slide up on the 4.0m
long frictionless ramp with a constant speed by pushing in a parallel direction
to the ramp.
R: 1400J

c) Find the work done by gravity on the furniture in each case.

R: -1400J

d) find the work done by the normal force of the ramp on the furniture.
Suppose that all forces are constant.
R: 0

Problem 6.2. Fun on a sled.

Diana pulls a sled on a snowy and flat road, while his brother Jasper travels
on it. The total mass of Jasper and the sled is 26kg. The rope makes an angle
of 20º to the ground. As a simplified model, suppose that the frictional force
on the sled is determined by µ k =.16, even when the surface isn’t dry (some
of the snow melts when people ski or skate on it.)
Find:
a) The work done by Diana. R: 4600J
b) The work done by the floor over the sled while it moves 120m along the
way with a constant speed of 3km/h. R: -4600J
c) What is the total work done on the sled? R: 0

Problem 6.3. Collision damage.

Why is the damage worse on a car collision when the vehicles involved were
moving at great speed?

Problem 6.4. Bungee jump.

A bungee jumper makes a leap in the du Verdon Gorge in southern France.

The diving platform is 182m above the bottom of the cliff. The jumper weighs
780N. If the jumper falls to less than 68m from the bottom of the cliff, how
much work is done by the elastic rope on the bungee jumper during its
descent? Ignore air resistance. R: 89kJ.
