Assignment 3

Refer to the piles described in El Naggar and Novak (1992).

1. Calculate the lateral capacity of piles 3 and 4 in UBC site and then calculate the
maximum bending moment. Comment on the results.

2. Calculate the lateral deflection of pile 3 in UBC when subjected to a 50kN horizontal
load acting at the pile head considering nonlinearity.

3. As part of the foundation design for a cement production facility, it is required to


calculate the factor of safety for a pile foundation made of 12m long - 40-pile group 8
x 5 (2.2m, 2.5m spacing in X and Y, respectively) that will be situated at the location
of CPT28 (as in assignment 1). The pile head is at 5.00 m below existing grade. The
pile cap is 13 m x 17.5 m and is 5 m thick. The maximum lateral load due to the
grinding force is 1 MN. Estimate the lateral displacement of the foundation.
