MEDIEVALIST PHILIPINES CHURCH OPPOSES CONTRACEPTION

The third world countries are the worst sufferers of both endemic poverty that gets difficult to fight
with an outpacing Growth of population- given their lower socio-econ0omic and educational levels.

As if this double whammy isn’t enough, compounding the crisis is the Church with its peculiar
medieval mindset and hair splitting theological interpretations.

This time the ice breaker speech of President Aquino had the hornet’s nest upset and after him as a
swarm of vicious bees.

He had advocated the passive birth control measures among an audience of American
Filipinos, forgetting that the Church back home already upset over the pending Health Bill on
the House of Representatives and the fact that in the Asian region Catholic Church still plays
a powerful role in the affairs of the countries.

This Medievalism in Asia is in stark contrast to the home ground of Vatican itself, Western
Europe being absolutely immune to its influence on such matters.

An AP Press release quotes Rev. Demogracas Yniguez of Catholic Bishops Conference of

Philippines declare – “The whole Church is against it”

In a queer pitch that was more a threat than a complaint-

“I won’t conceal the fact that we are hurt,” Rev.Melvin Castro said in a statement.
Politicians have long avoided clashing with the church, and it has in past proven its ability to
successfully intercede in politics.

Well, the Church not only does seem to interfere and meddle but decide the temporal-
political course of lives of nations there.

Their hold on the masses and politics can be inferred from Philippine history, when the
Bishops openly participated and ran the protests that toppled the regimes of Ferdinand
Marcos in the mid-eighties and Joseph Estrada in 2001.

Given that backdrop- there would be little wonder if the Government backfoots on the issue
and concedes to Medievalism and theology, instead of Health Science, reason and common
sense.
