2. Find the set of values of x such that the geometric series 1 + e −2 x + e −4 x + ... converges.
Find the exact value of x if the sum to infinity equals to 3. [6]

(i) Find A2 and A-1.
(ii) Express the system of linear equations below in the form of AX=B where X and
B are 3x1 matrices. Hence, find the values of x, y and z.
3x -8y+4z=3
4x -9y+4z=2
6x-12y+5z=2 [8]
4. Using the factor theorem or an alternative method, show that (2x-1) is factor of f(x) where
f(x) =6x3+23x2-5x-4. Hence, factorize f(x) completely and solve the equation f(x) = 0. [5]

5. Show that x − 2 and x + 2 are factors of the polynomial
p ( x ) = 2 x 4 + x 3 − 3 x 2 − 2 x − 2 and state a quadratic factor of p( x ) . Hence find the
second quadratic factor of p ( x ) . [4]

Ahmad works at a canteen, where a 250 ml cup of soft drink costs RM0.95, a 350 ml cup costs
RM1.15 and a 500 ml cup costs RM1.50. During an afternoon break, Ahmad served 17 cups of soft
drink, emptying five 1.2 liter bottles while collecting a total of RM19.80. If x, y and z respectively
represent the number of cups of each size filled, write a matrix equation to represent the above
information. Hence, find the number of cups of each size sold. [7]

7. Matrices M and N are given as

 1 1 − 1 −5 −5 5 
   
M =  2 3 2  and N =  8 6 − 4 .
5 4 1  − 7 1 1 
  
(a) Show that matrix M is non-singular. [2]
(b) Find MN and hence, find M-1 . [3]
(c) Four Season Cake House selling 3 types of cakes that is mango cake, blueberry cake and kiwi
cake. The price of each variety of cake is fixed. The price of a kiwi cakes same as the sum of
the price of a mango cake and a blueberry cake. Alice paid RM 39 for 2 mango, 3 blueberry
and 2 kiwi cakes. Terence paid RM 46 for 1 kiwi cake, 4 blueberry and 5 mango cakes.
If the prices of mango, blueberry and kiwi cakes per piece are RM x, RM y, and RM z
respectively, obtain a matrix equation to represent the given information. Hence, solve by
matrix method to determine the price of each variety of cake. [7]
