Inner work life

 People experience constant stream of

emotions, perception and motivation as
they react to and make sense of events of
the work day.

 The question is- how these dynamics

affect work performance?
 Do you know - your behavior as a
manager dramatically shapes your
employees inner work life.
Day to Day activities-
 As events unfolded you were also forming
perceptions …..about what?
 You were experiencing emotions…..what
kind?
 These emotions and perceptions were
intertwining to affect your work motivation
with consequences for your performance.
 This is what is meant by inner work life.-
 the dynamic interplay among perceptions
about what is happening and what it
means;
 emotions, whether sharply defined or
general feeling of good and bad;
 and motivation, your grasp of what needs
to be done and your desire to do it at any
given moment.
Processing work events
what happens inside…...

 Every worker’s performance is affected by the constant interplay of

perception, emotion, and motivation triggered by workday events,
including managerial action –yet inner work life remains mostly
invincible to management.

 Work day events -------human brain ---------work performance

(what happens inside…. Interplay of emotions, perception and motivation)

 Recent research in neuroscience has found that
emotions and cognition (which includes perception of
events) are tightly intertwined.

 Areas of brain associated with rational thoughts and

decision making have direct connection to areas
associated with feeling and emotions.

 So interaction is complex.
 Depending on what happens with these cognitive and emotional
processes, motivation can shift, which in turn affects how people
perform their work.
