OS Installation

Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to be able to install Windows 9x OS (Operating
System) in a newly formatted HDD. The student should be able to know the system’s
minimum requirements for an installation. The activity also introduces the steps in
making a dual boot system by installing Windows 2000/ NT and Windows 9x in two
different partitions.

Materials
• 1 unit PC system
• 1 Windows 98 startup disk
• 1 Windows 9x installer CD
• 1 Windows NT/ 2000
installer CD
Procedure
A. To Install Windows 9x
1. Turn on the system and boot from the Windows 98 startup disk without
CDROM support.
2. Partition the HDD maximizing the available disk space on the drive.
3. Restart the system for the changes to take effect, and then boot from
Windows 98 startup disk with CDROM support.
4. Format the drive C with a FAT32 file system.
5. After formatting the drive C, insert the Windows 9x installer CD in the
CDROM drive.
6. In A prompt, type D: and press <Enter> to change the root directory to the
CDROM drive.
7. In D prompt, type setup and press <Enter> to run the Windows 9x setup
program.
8. From here follow the instructions displayed on the screen to install
Windows 9x.

B. To install Windows NT/ 2000 on an existing Windows 9x


1. Turn on the system and boot up from Windows 98 startup disk without
CDROM support.
2. Partition the HDD to have drive C and drive D. Allocate 50% of the total
disk space to drive C and the remaining disk space to drive D.
3. Install the Windows 9x in drive C. Follow the instruction from Step 3 on
section A on how to install Windows 9x.
4. After the Windows 9x installation, insert the Windows NT/2000 installer
CD in the CDROM drive.
5. Restart the system and press the <DEL> key to go to the BIOS Setup.
6. At the “BIOS CMOS Setup Main Menu”, select “BIOS Feature Setup”
and change the boot sequence to “CDROM, C, A” option.
7. Select “Save and Exit Setup”. The system should restart and boot from the
Windows NT/ 2000 installer CD.
8. Follow the instruction as displayed on the screen on how to install
Windows NT/ 2000.
9. Restart the system after the installation and select the OS to start.
