The radio amateurs best friend,a multi-tool

I was given a Coghlan multi-tool which I found handy when working on antennas but it has
rather sharp edges to the handles and is a light duty tool.

So I was on the lookout for the Rolls Royce of multi-tools and located a used Leatherman
Core.
It came without a case and the pliers cutters were nicked. I contacted the local agents and
explained how I had purchased the Core. No problem bring it in to the repair centre, which I
did and they fitted a brand new set of pliers and serviced the multi -tool.
The lifetime guarantee is for real.

The Core is one of the largest multi-tools made by Leatherman and is quite heavy so you
will need a pouch for it. While I was at the service centre I bought a nylon cloth pouch with
belt strap which when working on the roof and tower I strap to my arm like a watch. This
tool is for heavy duty use and all the blades and tools are large and do a proper job.
The thumb locks at the bottom of the handles keep all the tools secured in the handles.
There is however a design flaw in that a certain combination
of tools selected will not allow the pliers to be folded back into the handle. This can be
worked around by a certain sequence of folding the handles if you can remember it.

The Core is very well made and all screwdrivers are hollow ground for max torque
application. No sockets are supplied and must be ordered as an extra. The handles are very
comfortable and the folding action is smooth. All the tools when retracted lock firmly into
place and also come out one by one and not in a bunch.
So if you need a heavy duty real mans Leatherman this quality multi-tool does the
job. However if you have smaller hands and wish to carry the tool on your person then look
at the Wave which also comes with a set of sockets.
