FORMS OF PRONOUNS

Cases of Pronouns
Introduction
The pronoun he, his, and him represent
three different forms of one pronoun .
The pronoun he is a nominative form.
The pronoun his is a possessive form,
and the pronoun him is an objective
form.
PRONOUN FORMS
Nominative I we you he she it they
Objective me us you him her it them
Possessive my our your his her its their
THE NOMINATIVE CASE
We use the nominative form as:
1. Subjects of verbs
Example:
They demonstrated the use of the photocopier.
(They is the subject of the verb demonstrated.)

Ranjin and she prepared the report.

(Here, the pronoun she is part of the compound subject
Ranjin and she, which is the subject of the verb
prepared.)
As you know, I gave it to Ms. Guanlao.
(You is the subject of the verb know, and I is the subjecct
of the verb gave, and it is an objective form.)

Notice that the forms you and it can either be

nominative or objective.
2. Predicate Noun
Example:
It is I!
(Not: It is me.)

The two winners were Rhonda and she.

(Not: Rhonda and her)
Remember: We use the nominative pronouns following
the verbs am, is, are, were was, be, been, or any form of
the verb to be.)
THE OBJECTIVE CASE
We use the objective form as:
1. Direct object of verbs
Example:
Heidi will sell them today.
(Them is the direct object of the verb sell. Sell what? Them.)
2. Indirect objects (Note: An indirect object follows the verb and
answers the question to whom, for whom, to what, or for what.)
The president will buy him a computer. (Buy whom? No answer.
The president, of course, will not buy him. Buy what? A
computer. Thus computer is the direct object. Him is an indirect
object.)
3. Objects of prepositions
Example:
Give the report to her.
(Her is the object of the preposition to.)
They need another person like you.
(You is the object of the preposition like.)
Yes, I was asking about them.
(Them is the object of the preposition about.)
THE POSSESSIVE CASE
We use the possessive form to:
1. Show ownership
my printer his idea our firm its quota
your office her papers their presentation
As you see, these forms are used before nouns. The
forms mine, yours, hers, his, its and theirs can be
used in place of nouns.
This book is mine, but that one is yours.
If that book is theirs, then where is ours?
