INTRODUCTION

More than 60% of the total power in india is produced by steam power plant. This position is
likely to continue due to large pit head plants being set up in our country.

Barauni , is a small village in the district of Begusarai ,Bihar. Here the Baraui Thermal Power
Station commonly known as BTPS was established in 1963. Initially two unit (unit 2&3) of 15
MW were set up in collaboration with USA with the tools and equipments being supplied by
Yugoslavia. Slowly with the increase in the demand, the need for an additional 15 MW unit
grew and this was finally addressed on 26.1.66 with the third unit coming into existence. With
the coming up of the Barauni Indian Oil Refinery, a Fertilizer company and a steel rolling mill,
another two units of 50 MW were installed in 1969 and 1971 which are out of operation since
1996 due to accusations by the state of over pollution. Due to uneconomic operation, unit 1
was shut down on 16.2.1983, unit 2 on 26.22.1985 and unit 3 on 5.10.1985. as time passed by
and the requirements soared, two additional units of 110 MW were installed with the help of
BHEL on 5th February 1976. Unit 7 is proposed for maintenance and renovation. Since then BTPS
has won many awards and was the most advanced Power plant of its time.
