About the Book
"The Book of the Dead is the common name for the a cient Egyptian fu nera ry text known as 'The Book of Comi ng , [or 'Going']' Forth By Day'. The book of the dead was a description of the ancient Egyp ian conception of the afterlife and a collection of hymns, spells, and instr ctions to allow the deceased to pass through obstacles in the afterlife. T e book of the dead was most commonly written on a papyrus scroll an placed in the coffin or burial chamber ofthe deceased.
The na me 'Book of th e Dead' was the invention of the Germ n Egyptologist Karl Richard Lepsius, who published a selection of the texts in 1842. When it was first discovered, the book of the dead was thought t be an ancient Egyptian Bible. But unlike the Bible, The Book of the Dea does not set forth religious tenets and was not considered by the ancie t Egyptians to be the product of divine revelation, which allowed the cant nt of the book of the dead to change over time. The Book of the Dea was thus the product of a long process of evolution from the Pyramid t xts of the Old Kingdom to the Coffi n Texts of th e Midd Ie Kingdom. About ne-th ird of the chapters in The Book of the Dead are derived from the C ffin Texts. The Book of the Dead itself was adapted to The Book of Breath ngs in the Late Period, but remained popular in its own right until the Roman period."

The Egyptian Book of the Dead
PREFACE
THE Papyrus of Ani, w ich was acquired by the Trustees ofthe British Museum in the year 888, is the largest, the most perfect, the best preserved, and the est illuminated of all the papyri which date from the second half of the XVIlith dynasty (about B.C. 1500 to 1400). Its rare vignettes, and hymns, nd chapters, and its descriptive and introductory ru brics re nder it of un iq ue i mporta nce for the study ofthe Book ofthe Dead, and it takes a high pia e among the authoritative texts of the Theban version of that remarkable ork. Although it contains less than one-half of the chapters which are c mmonly assigned to that version, we may concl ude that An i's exalted fficia I position as Cha ncellor of the ecclesiastical revenues and endowm nts of Abydos and Thebes would have ensured a selection of such chapters as would suffice for his spiritual welfare in the future life. We may therefore regard the Papyrus of Ani as typical of the funeral book in vogue amon the Theban nobles of his time.
The first edition of the Fac imile of the Papyrus was issued in 1890, and was accompanied by a valu ble Introduction by Mr. Le Page Renouf, then Keeper of the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities. But, in order to satisfy a wide Iy exp essed dema nd for a tra nslatio n of the text, the present volume has been pr pared to be issued with the second edition of the Facsimile. It contains the hieroglyphic text of the Papyrus with interlinear transliteration and word for word translation, a full description of the vignettes, and a ru ning translation; and in the Introduction an attempt has been made t illustrate from native Egyptian sources the rei igious views of the wonde rfu I people who more tha n five thousa nd yea rs ago proclaimed the resurre tion of a spiritual body and the immortality of the soul.
The passages wh ich su pply 0 rmssrons, a nd vignettes wh ich conta in important variations either in subject matter or arrangement, as well as supplementary texts which ppear in the appendixes, have been, as far as possible, drawn from other ontemporary papyri in the British Museum.
The second edition ofthe Fa simile has been executed by Mr. F. C. Price.

THE VERSIONS OF THE BOOK OF THE DEAD
The four great Versions of the Book of the Dead
THE history of the great body of religious compositions which orm the Book of Dead of the ancient Egyptians may convenientl be divided into four:' of the periods, which are represented by four ve rsions:--
1. The version which was edited by the priests of the college of Annu (the On of the Bible, and the Heliopolis of the Greeks), and which was b sed upon a series of texts now lost, but which there is evidence to prove had passed th ro ugh a se ries of revisions or ed itions as ea rly as the period 0 the Vth dynasty. This version was, so far as we know, always writt n in hieroglyphics, and may be called the Heliopolitan version. It is known rom five copies wh ich are inscribed upon the wa lis of the cha m bers and passages in the pyramids" of kings of the Vth and Vlth dynasti s at Sakkara::' and sections of it are found inscribed upon tombs, sarcop agi, coffins, stelee and papyri from the Xlth dynasty to about A.D. 200.4
II. The Theban version, which was commonly written on papyri in hi rogIyphics and was divided into sections or chapters, each of which ha its distinct title but no definite place in the series. The version was much sed from the XVilith to the XXth dynasty.
III. A version closely allied to the preceding version, which is found wr tten on papyri in the hieratic character and also in hieroglyphics. In this ver ion, which came into use about the XXth dynasty, the chapters have no ixed order.
IV. The so-called Salte version, in which, at some period anterior pro to the XXVlth dynasty, the chapters were arranged in a definite order commonly written in hieroglyphics and in hieratic, and it was much sed from the XXVlth dynasty to the end ofthe Ptolemaic period"
Early forms of th e Book of the Dead

The Egyptian Book of the Dead
The earliest inscribed monuments and human remains found in Egypt prove that the ancient Egyptians took the ut ost care to preserve the bod ies of their dead by va rious processes of e ba 1m ing. The deposit of the body in the tomb was accompanied by ceremo ies of a symbolic nature, in the course of which certain compositions comp ising prayers, short litanies, etc., having reference to the future life, were r cited or chanted by priests and relatives on behalf of the dead. The greate t importance was attached to such compositions, in the belief that their cital would secure for the dead an unhindered passage to God in the next world, would enable him to overcome the opposition of all ghostly foes, w uld endow his body in the tomb with powe r to resist corru ption, and wou I e nsu re him a new life in a glorified body in heaven. At a very remote peri d certain groups of sections or chapters had already become associated wi h some of the ceremonies which preceded actual burial, and these eventually became a distinct ritual with clearly defined limits. Side by side, how ver, with this ritual there seems to have existed another and larger wor which was divided into an indefinite number of sections or chapters co prising chiefly prayers, and which dealt on a larger scale with the welfare f the departed in the next world, and described the state of existence therein and the dangers which must be passed successfully before it could be reached, and was founded generally on the religious dogmas and mytholo of the Egyptians. The title of "Book of the Dead" is usually given by Egy tologists to the editions of the larger work which were made in the XVIII h and following dynasties, but in this Introduction the term is intended to include the general body of texts which have reference to the burial of the dead and to the new life in the world beyond the grave, and which are known to have existed in revised editions and to have been in use amon the Egyptians from about B.C. 4500, to the ea rly centu ries of the Ch ristia n era.
Uncertainty of the history of ts source
The home, origin, and early history of the co lection of ancient religious texts which have descended to us are, at resent, unknown, and all working theories regarding them, however st ongly supported by apparently well-asce rta ined facts, must be ca refu II d isti ngu ished as theories only, so long as a single ancient necropolis in Eg pt remains unexplored and its inscriptions are untranslated. Whether th y were composed by the inhabitants of Egypt, who recorded them in hieroglyphic characters, and
