EXPERIMENT : 5.

1 Percentage of oxygen in the air

AIM : To determine the percentage of oxygen in the air

MATERIAL : Rubber bands, candle, matches, water

APPARATUS : Gas jar, gas jar stand, glass throug

DRAW THE PICTURE ON BLACKBOARD

PROCEDURE : 1. Divide the gas jar into five equal parts using rubber bands.

2. Fix a candle to a gas jar stand with melting wax. Place the
stand in a glass through of water.

3. Light up the candle. Invert the gas jar over the lightened
candle.

4. Examine the change in the water level in the gas jar as the
candle goes off.

5. Draw your observation in the diagram below.

OBSERVATION : The water level in the gas jar rise until it reached
________ of the mark

height when the candle went off.

ANALYSIS : 1 Why doesn’t water enter the gas jar at the beginning of the
activity?

Occupies the space inside the

gas jar.

2 Name the gas needed for the candle to burn

3(a) What happens to the candle flame after a while?

(b) Explain your observation?

All the in the gas jar has been used up.

4. What percentage of air is used for the burning?

5. From your answer in (4) estimate the percentage of

oxygen in ordinary air

CONCLUSION : The burning of candle requires __________________ .The

water level of the water rises 1/5 in the gas jar showing that air
contains about ___% oxygen
