She overlooked him.

It was hard not to considering what a mess he was, greasy hair, dry lips
brushing against the metal over his teeth, a hormonally bruised face- all factors to creating a
boy that most took for granted. But even then she could see the good in him, his strong heart,
his ocean eyes hiding behind the thick glass of his specs, the way he scrunched his nose when
he couldn’t figure out a math problem- she loved him for that. Just not the way he wished she
would.

He overlooked her. Un-kept hair, bitten nails and a face hidden under a dark hood wasn’t an
attractive combination, especially in high school where girls stopped believing in courage and
decided to pursue something better like shoes. He had what he wanted; he was a new man
now- strong physic, flawless face and smooth caramel locks twisted around his head. He had no
reason to pay attention to her, not that he could stop himself. The way she bit her lower lip,
how she shuffled her legs when she was nervous or how wide her smile got when she made a
goal in the field- he loved her for that. Just not the way she wished he would.

No overlooking. She noticed when he needed her to touch him, to caress his skin until all the
worries disappeared. She knows which jersey he needs for Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Wednesdays… she knows he likes his meat medium rare, and that German beer is the best
beer. He knows she likes her coffee strong and she prefers to mix the sugar in herself. He knows
she always leaves her keys on the kitchen counter and he will wait for her in front of the door-
holding the keys up above her, begging for a kiss good bye.

They know they won’t find anyone else who would understand like they do, who will touch
each spot like if they knew what the other was feeling. They will never overlook.
