A BHUMI INITIATIVESS EN
CHANGE TODAY...nn
Thank You!
Bhumi’s Siragugal is testimony to the power of the innumerable
dreams that culminated on 15th November 2009. We are pleased to
bring out this souvenir of our annual cultural and science fest for chil-
dren from orphanages across Chennai in which 796 children from 26
orphanages participated in sixteen different events this year. An event
of this scale could not have been orchestrated through the efforts of
just a few people, and we are thankful to all those who made this event
possible.
Bhumi is grateful to the management, staff and children of the partici-
pating children’s homes who actively took part in the event with great
enthusiasm despite the heavy rains.
Bhumi is indebted to Outreach (CSR initiative, Cognizant Technology
Solutions) and Sneham (CSR initiative, Infosys) for supporting the
event monetatily and through volunteer participation. Bhumi whole-
heartedly thanks both the management and staff of Cognizant Tech-
nology Solutions, Emerson, HCL ‘l'echnologies, Hewlett Packard,
Larsen & Tubro, Lycatel, Orchid Pharmaceuticals, Sniper Systems and
Tata Consultancy Services for helping us raise funds for the event
through raffle tickets.
Bhumi sincerely thanks the management of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kil-
pauk for readily coming forward to offer a suitable venue for Siragugal.
Bhumi also expresses its gratitude to volunteers from the College of
Engineering (Guindy), the Indian Institute of Financial Management
and Chinmaya Organisation for Rural Development(Thamatraipakkam) for supporting Bhumi effectively and efficiently.
We also thank our other sponsors and partners, State Bank of India,
Food King, AID India, ASAP Productions, Bala Tourist Cabs, Rotary
club of Madras Chenna Patna, ISHRAE, Sniper Systems, SS Music,
Velammal’s Pupa and Well-Mech, without whose support and contri-
bution this talent carnival wouldn’t have been possible.
Bhumi is very proud of each and
every volunteer who contributed
to Siragugal with energy and untir-
ing enthusiasm. We will be back
with a bigger and better Siragugal
in 2010!

250 children benefit.

Siragugal ‘09 Events
Adaptunes
This event demands quick changes in the style of dancing to suit the
genre of music played. At Siragugal, as the DJ started playing the med-
leys hesitant movements gradually turned into rocking steps. Constant
cheering from the audience and the volunteer team set the tempo for
many timid participants. We were amazed by the children’s ability to
switch styles without taking much time to think. The event was
wrapped up with the judge’s performance, one that got our coordina-
tors and children up and dancing again in no time.

Drawing
As the clock ticked away, little hands carefully guided pencils aroundand manoeuvred paint-laden brushes on paper that was slowly disap-
pearing under layers of exuberant colour and flowing lines. One draw-
ing stood out for its intricate flower patterns while another was a mas-
terpiece in pencil shading. A child made us smile by covering the entire
paper with paint so that his artistic vision was no longer constrained by
a white background. Children bent over their papers everywhere,
tongues pecking out between lips in concentration, fingers frantically
searching for erasers, focused eyes filled with visions related to the
topic “Siragugal’”. Such was this hour-long drawing competition that
brought out the inherent creative side of the 119 participants.

Elocution
Despite a shaky start, the first speaker immediately picked herself upee
and gave such a good speech that the others were raring to participate
too. What followed were commendable speeches with great confi-
dence and supportive body language. The content was peppered with
wisdom and wit and the clarity of thought displayed was astounding.
Topics included “If I were invisible”, “I can make a difference by...”,
“Do children of these days play outdoor games” and “Role of media in

Essay Writing - Tamil
The essays delivered in this on-the-spot event reflected immense cre-
ativity, profound thought and keen observation of contemporary soci-
ety. While “2050-il nam ulagam (Our world in 2050)” and “Naan ra-
sitha iyarkai kaatchi (My most memorable glimpse of nature)” un-
leashed the children’s imagination and creativity, topics like
“Tho(laikaatchi (TV — Boon / Bane)”, and “Puththagam padippathu

brought out healthy arguments with real-life scenarios and examples.PRIZE WINNERS:

Mimicry - Monoact
We were surprised to see 14 registrations for this very challenging
event and even mote amazed by the performances delivered. While
Uday Kumar (4th standard) won all our hearts with his spectacular
body language and accurate mimicry of actor Kamal Hassan, Suresh
(12th standard) made us roll in laughter by spoofing Kollywood actors.
A few other children took us into the world of animals and birds with
their outstanding performances.

Poetry - Tamil
The spark in every child’s eyes as the themes were announced reflected
their eagerness to instantly transform their thoughts into poetic verses.
The emotions a few children captured in poetry to depict “Natpu
(Friendship), “lyarkai (Nature)”, “Mazhalai (Innocence)” and
“Palikoodam (School)” touched the hearts of the volunteers andjudges alike. The awe-inspiring and heart-stirring thoughts of the chil-
dren transformed blank sheets of paper into works of art.

Pot Painting
In spite of the event being unusual the number of children wanting to
participate far outnumbered the pre-registration count for the event.
The children were lost in their thoughts soon after the event com-
menced. While some drew satisfaction from simple artwork, others in-
vested great effort and time in intricately depicting Arabic designs, cari-
catures and more on the pots.

Rangoli
The myth that the art of kolam / rangoli is the domain of girls was
broken at this group event. We had equal participation from boys and
girls of different age groups. We didn’t want to curb the imagination of
the children by restricting them to a theme, and the results were indeed
spectacular! The social and environmental messages expressed by
some of the entries left us spellbound. The beautiful variety of designs
showcased with a perfect choice of colours brightened the mundane
floors of the mezzanine, creating a festive ambience.

Soap Carving
Armed with brightly coloured serrated plastic knives, the children set
out to carve their ideas into fragrant bars of soap, undeterred by inad-
vertent breakages in the medium often brought on by their brimming
eagerness and enthusiasm. Flurries of soap flakes swirled about the
children and carpeted the room. The children fashioned out flowers,
vehicles, fish, musical instruments, ships and intriguing abstract figu-
tines, all of which soon caught the eye of curious passers by. The shine
of accomplishment in their eyes and their satisfied smiles seemed to
embody the spirit of Siragugal.

much applauded and helped in recreating the original songs onstage.

Quiz
During the event, we were surprised that the children were competent

spirits were high.

Science Exhibition
Bhumi’s ‘Little Einsteins’ team of volunteers was overjoyed to see im-
mense skill and deep understanding of concepts displayed in the
models by the children at this competition that doubled as an exhibi-
tion. Volunteers, to create an enriching experience for the children,
had put in efforts to demonstrate experiments like bleeding hand,
magic ink and popping floor. Witnessing the exhibits created by the
participating children was truly a learning experience to one and all.

Skit - Tamil
The kids’ performances were nothing short of extraordinary in terms
of script, acting, costumes and the sheer volume of effort that every
member of every team put in. The predominant theme of most of the
teams was comedy. The event provided room for some actual theatreperformances that would astonish many a professional. Some
children’s homes showed a glimpse of their potential by giving a thor-
oughly captivating performance in utmost synchrony.
