Identification - The Aeneid

As you read Books II and IV of The Aeneid, use the Sparknotes for each
chapter to help you identify the following:

1. Vergil- He wrote the Aeneid.

2. The Aeneid- Aeneas and his Trojans flee from Troy, and Aeneas takes

his father Anchises, his son Ascanius, and his wife Creusa when he

flees Troy and Creusa gets killed. They sail to Italy so Aeneas can

conquer Rome.

3. Aeneas- He is the main character of the Aeneid and he is the son of

Venus and Anchises. Aeneas is a fearsome warrior.

4. Venus- the goddess of love and the mother of Aeneas by Anchises.

5. Jupiter- the king of the gods, and the son of Saturn.

6. Dido- The queen of Carthage, a city in North Africa, and the lover of

Aeneas. She killed herself after Aeneas left Carthage.

7. Carthage- A city in North Africa, Dido is the queen of this city.

8. Cupid- A son of Venus, and the god of love.

9. Ascanius- Creusa and Aeneas’s son.

10. Sinon- He pretends to have been left behind at the end of the Trojan

War. He persuades the Trojans to take the wooden horse as an offering

to Minerva.

11. Minerva- The goddess who protects the Greeks during the Trojan War

and helps them conquer Troy.


12. Ulysses- The hero of Homer’s Odyssey, and one of the captains of the

Greek army that takes Troy.

13. Laocoon- Trojan priest of Troy, Laocoon and his two sons are killed by

serpents.

14. Hector- The greatest of the Trojan warriors killed at Troy.

15. Priam- The king of Troy.

16. Helen- The wife of Menelaus and her abduction to Troy by Paris sparks

the Trojan War.

17. Anchises- The father of Aeneas. He marries Venus and she is a goddess

and the gods do not like that so they punish him for marrying a

goddess, so the gods cripple him.

18. Creusa- The wife of Aeneas and the mother of Ascanius. She dies when

they are fleeing from Troy.

19. Mercury- The messenger god.
