Communication
• The process of communication is what allows
us to interact with other people; without it, we
would be unable to share knowledge or
experiences with anything outside of ourselves.
• Common forms of communication include
speaking, writing, gestures, touch and
broadcasting.
• Communication are of two types :
i. Verbal Communication
ii.Non Verbal Communication
Non Verbal Communication
Definition:
“We will try to persuade with our words, but if our
words fail, we will try to persuade with out acts.”

• Nonverbal communication is
defined as messages
expressed through symbols other than words.

• Non-verbal communication makes no use of the


words, sentences, grammar and other structures that
we associate with spoken and written language.

• Non-verbal communication
includes facial expressions,
eye contact, tone of voice,
body posture and motions,
and positioning within groups.
Examples:
• How dumb communicates without telling a
single word.

• In Asian countries like India the eyes have a


special role to play in conveying messages.

• In an organization how the manager emphasis a


particular point by moving his hands or making
some facial expression.
Body Language
 Body Language means changes that occur in
the body position & movements that show
what the person is feeling or thinking.
 Most of us are not aware of it,but it makes a
powerful impact on others.
 It is Omnipresent.
 It is Emotionally expressive.
 It Dominates interaction.
 It seems trustable.
Types of Body Language
 Open body language: Many
reasons for being open.
 Aggressive body language:
Showing physical threat.  Power body language:
Demonstrating one's power.
 Bored body language: Just not
being interested.  Ready body language: Wanting
to act and waiting for the trigger.
 Deceptive body language:
Seeking to cover up lying or other  Relaxed body language:
deception. Comfortable and unstressed.

 Romantic body language:


 Defensive body language: Showing attraction to others.
Protecting self from attack.
 Submissive body language:
 Emotional body language: Showing you are prepared to give

Aspects of Body Language
Appearance:-
Involves 2 factors,
1.Grooming.
2.Personal hygiene.
Clothing & Accessories:-
 Clothing creates an impression on what you wear.
 Appropiate accessories should be carried
so that one looks comfortable & graceful
or it conveys a poor image.
Posture:-
 Postures refers to the way we hold
ourselves.
 It indicates our feelings , thoughts, health
& attitudes.
Types:-
1.Forward lean – attentiveness,interest
2.Drawing back or turning away– refusing
3.Expansion – proud,arrogant
4.Bowed head – depessed,dejected
Facial expression:-
It accompanies speaker’s words &
indicates listener’s reactions.
Smile:-
“A smile costs nothing , but
gives much.”
EYE CONTACT
• Eye movement is a key part of facial behavior ,
directing others attention or showing surprise
or happiness and other emotional displays.

• Comfort level for the eye contact is three


seconds.

• Avoiding eye contact.


GESTURES

• Gestures are movements of hands/head/body;


they are a natural accompaniment of speech.

• Gestures may not have specific


meaning.
ENERGY
• Energy conveys competence and inspires
respect.

• A healthy person is energetic and maintains a


certain level of enthusiasm in work.

• A persons enthusiasm is reflected in the style.


SPACE
• The distance we keep from the other person
while speaking, indicates the relationship.

• Four types of distance


1. Intimate space
2. Personal space
3. Social distance
4. Public distance
TIME
• A person who uses one's own time and
other peoples time wastefully, creates a
impression of being inefficient and
disorganized.

• Sense of timing in conducting meetings


and in conveying good or bad news.
Paralanguage
• Paralanguage is the Non-Verbal aspects of
the spoken words and is used to express
emotions such as gestures, eye contact,
touch and many others.
• The study of Paralanguage, also known as,
Paralinguistic’s, has opened up many ways
to understand aspects of culture that
someway had not understood in the past.
How often is paralanguage used ?
• Communication is essential in our classrooms
yesterday, today or tomorrow and consists of
much more than speech or writing.
• According to O’Neill, 70% of communication
face to face with others is done through
paralanguage.
• Paralanguage is said to be important because
people are less likely to lie or try to cover up
emotions.
Verbal aspects of paralanguage
• VOICE- has characteristics like tone,
volume and pitch.
• SPEED-pronunciation, accent, intonation.
• STRESS- eg.. “Why didn’t you come to
college yesterday?
• SILENCE
• TIME
