    Ulysses is a collaborative space probe between ESA and NASA that is exploring the heliosphere in 4 dimensions from a polar orbit around the sun. It is the only probe to do so. Ulysses was launched in 1990 aboard the space shuttle Discovery and used a gravity assist from Jupiter to enter its orbital path. Ulysses carries 10 experiments to study the solar wind, magnetic fields, energetic particles, cosmic rays, interstellar dust, and radio waves. It has provided observations through one full solar cycle from solar minimum to maximum and back again.

    Scientific payload
    Ulysses carries 10 experiments to
    measure the main constituents of
    the heliosphere:
    • Solar wind
    • Magnetic fields
    • Energetic particles and cosmic
    rays
    • Interstellar dust and neutral gas
    • Radio and plasma waves
    • Gamma-ray bursts
    A number of these instruments
    were flown in space for the first time
