SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL SCIENCES, HMS111 ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS 1 PRACTICE TEST 2 Total marks: 25 May 2009 Attempt all questions Time allowed: 50 min writing NO CALCULATORS ARE TO BE USED IN THIS TEST. Show sufficient working to demonstrate your understanding of the processes required. There are seven questions, All answers are to be written on the pages of this test. If you run out of space, use the blank pages opposite or behind, and INDICATE THIS CLEARLY. There is a short list of formulas at the end of the paper. DO NOT SEPARATE THE PAGES FROM THE STAPLE. The mark from this test counts for 15% of your mark for the semester. You should never assume that the questions on the "real" test will be the same as or similar to those on the Practice Test, or that they will be asked in precisely the same way. There is a certain amount of work you are expected to know; the Practice Test asks certain questions on that body of work, and so does the real Test, but there is no guarantee that the format or the selection of questions, or the style of the questions, will correspond, In this case any of the objectives from Topics 4 or 5 might be tested. This covers a vast amount of material. The Practice Test, for instance, does not include questions on linear or quadratic functions, or partial fractions, or exponential functions and logarithms, or inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions (all in Topic 4). In Topic 5 (Differentiation) you should certainly revise all the rules of differentiation (product rule, chain rule, quotient rule, implicit and logarithmic differentiation etc) and all of the applications (curves, maxima and minima, rates, errors, Taylor polynomials, |'Hépital’s Rule and the Newton-Raphson Method). Because this test is calculator-free, you can assume that there will be no questions requiring detailed calculation, although simple mental arithmetic will be expected (as in the Practice Test). You should use the Practice Test only as a guide of the sort of questions that might be asked, and the amount of work you will be expected to do in the time allowed. You should keep a Practice Test until a late stage in your preparation, and use it as a time trial to see if you need to improve you speed of working. The Formulas provided with the actual test will differ a little from those here. You will be given the whole of p. 6 (derivatives) from the standard ten pages of formulas (as in the Notes), together with those elements of the other pages that relate to the questions asked. Nothing in the ten pages of formulas is expected to be memorized.
