GORILLAS

Gorillas live in the lowland areas of tropical

rainforests. A full grown male weighs about 400

pounds and is about 5.6 feet tall. A female weighs

about 200 pounds and is about 4.6 feet tall. Four

different species of gorillas I found are Eastern

Lowland gorillas, Western Lowland gorillas,

Mountain gorillas and the cross river gorillas.

Different species eat some different foods. The foods they eat are leaves, stems,

roots, vines, herbs, trees, grass, fruit, plants, seeds, flowers, snails, grubs, piths

and invertebrates. Some species eat caterpillars and termites. Gorillas rarely

drink anything because they get water from the food they eat. When they do

drink water they use the hair on the back of their hand to soak up the water. An

adult male can consume more than 40 pounds of vegetation a day. The gorilla’s

only known predators are humans, leopards and crocodiles. Gorillas can live to

be 50 years old in captivity and 34 in the wild. In this

lifetime females will have up

to 2-6 surviving offspring. There is almost one surviving offspring every 6-8

years. A female usually has only one offspring, two is rare. Gorillas

communicate with each other by using gestures, body postures, facial

expressions, odors, slapping their chest and vocal sounds. Even though they

cannot speak the gorilla can understand our

language and can learn sign language.
