White Noise

A random process whose power spectral

density is constant and hence independent
of frequency is called white noise.
All the frequency components in white
noise contribute equally to noise power.
The double sided power spectral density
(PSD) of white noise with a sample
function denoted by w(t) is :
Sw(f)=No/2………….(1)
• In a bandwidth of B Hz,the available noise power due
to white noise is
P=NoB ……….(2)
•The available noise power of a thermal noise source
is:
Pa=KTB ………(3)

Comparing 2 and 3 we get PSD of white noise:

No = KT = No /2 =KT/2 …………(4)
•The noisyness of a noise source is often measured
in terms of equivalent noise temperature.
•The equivalent noise temperature Te of a system is
defined as the temperature at which a noisy resistor
resistor the input of a noiseless version of the system,
It produces the same available noise power at the
output of the system,as that produced by all the
sources of noise in the actual system.
•Replacing T by Te in eqn(3) the noise equivalent
Temperature is Te =Pa /KB.
•Replacing T by Te in eqn(4)
No/2 =K Te /2
•From the fourier transform theory, PSD and auto-
correlation funtion are fourier transform pairs.
