Byzantine History: Part 3 Immigration

Now in the last part of the byzantine series we talked about Christianity; howev
er, that wasn't the only issue that Constantine and his successors had to face.
From the moment Constantine became emperor, he faced an enormous problem and tha
t was the defense of the empire.
Now the Roman Empire as powerful as it might've been is exhausted. It faced coun
tless civil wars and on top of that another one right after Constantine's death.
His son's squabled with each other eventually leading to another civil war in wh
ich Constans was userped by his own general.
And this obviously puts a taxing toll on the west, but more serious than that th
e Persians in the east were gaining strength under a new empire called the sassa
nids. While the barbarians was only strong due to their numbers the Persians wer
e strong because of the same reason as the Romans.
They were organized, diciplined and their government was sophicticated. When the
n invaded they didn't invade for loot, they invaded to conquer and that posed a
serious issue for the Empire
So at that time had to face the major problem of the fact theres too many invasi
ons and not enough soldiers to confront them.
There were the persians in the east and more importantly there were the germanic
tribes to the north. One thing to note is that when a society becomes complex,
the less percentage of its populas they can invest into the military. Taking tha
t into the equation the Romans just didn't have enough manpower to be able to ef
fectively confront barbarians on all sides.
It was truely due to shere talent of Constans and Constantius that actually held
the empire in defense, but even then raids weren't going to stop.
Sadly the emperor Constans was usurped and Constantius had to come for rescue an
d we receive a new emperor by the name Julian which everyone will come to know a
s the apostate
