Initial Ideas and Concepts

Learning Objectives:
1. To consider the conventions you will need to adhere
to in your coursework.
2. To create a treatment of your film.
3. To begin to consider your opening scene.
Genre Research
1. Choose a film genre to research.
2. Create a PowerPoint presentation of
background research;
– Themes and ideas
– Timeline of significant developments in the genre.
– At least 5 opening sequences from the genre and
your film analysis notes.
– Images/film titles/actors and directors associated
with the genre.

3. Upload your PowerPoint to your blog.


Genre Conventions
1. In your coursework group compare your research on the genre
you have chosen. Discuss:
a) What happens in the opening sequences;
b) What kinds of characters there are;
c) What the dialogue is like;
d) Camera / mise-en-scene / editing / sound.

2. List three key films which will influence your coursework


production.

3. Come up with a list of ten things which you will do in your


coursework production to keep within the genre.

4. Come up with one way in which your coursework production will


deviate from the conventions of the genre.
