British Gangster Film

By Mantas Cesnulevicius
Themes and Ideas
The themes behind a gangster film are violence, guns, lots of swearing,
death, and dark comedy. One idea I have for our film is to have a
man wounded by bullets dropping dead in a dark alley. Then I
thought we could have some kind of voice over with the man saying
something like he knew this was going to happen, and a flashback
showing his gangster life before. Even though the gangster genre
originated in America, I thought that we should use the same
conventions but adapt them to a more British setting and style. For
example, English cockney and British slang.
Timeline of the Gangster genre
The first ever significant Gangster film was made in 1912 called The
Musketeers of Pig Alley, however, the gangster films truly came in
during the 1930’s and they started to attract people to the theatres.
However, British gangster films only appeared in 1960’s after the
gangster genre became really popular in the USA.
