Geography.

It is located on the northern area of the island, with a population of 31 830. It is 37 Km

from Santa Cruz de Tenerife by road.

To the north, it encounters the sea, with a coast of cliffs that has been modified by the
tourist and recreational facilities

History

Puerto de la cruz was born After the conquest finished in 1506 at that time the
population was scarce and dedicated to commercial activities.

When the sugar cane plantations began to weaken, the monoculture of certain
grapevinestalks for wine production flourished, increasing produce exports to England
more than 85 %, which prompted English business men to establish themselves in the
region.

With the construction of the Taoro hotel, Monopol hotel and the Marquesa, a nucleus
was formed that gave rise to the present day tourist area of this city.

The displacement of the maritime traffic towards the harbour of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
and its development, together with the monoculture’s crisis, initiates the vertiginous
decline of this municipality until the middle of the XX century, when tourism became
the main basis of its economy.

Culture.
Among the local celebrations, the most notable is the Carnival, with an abundance of
colours and costumes, with brass bands and contests.

The Crockery Festivity at the end of November, is outstanding, it takes place during the
Festivities of San Andrés, when the wine cellars are opened and the town dwellers drag
metal recipients through the streets until reaching the cellar..

On June 24 th, the festivity of San Juan, popularly cherished, relives ancestral customs
related to the aborigine world, such as taking the goat herds for a sea bath, in the area of
the old dock.

The festivities of July, related to Jesus of the Great Power and to the Virgin of Carmen,
originated from the fishermen and this regions harbour.

Politics

In spite of the different Mayors the city has had, there hasn’t been any important
changes in the city ,consecuently the city remains almost the same.
