What is Electricity ?
Electricity is a basic part of nature and it is one of
our most widely used forms of energy.
We get electricity, which is a secondary energy
source, from the conversion of other sources
of energy, like coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear power
and other natural sources, which are called
primary sources.

1.The scientist's definition: "Electricity" means only

one thing: it's the electrons and protons, the
electric charge.
.Examples: CURRENT OF ELECTRICITY.
QUANTITY OF ELECTRICITY. COULOMBS OF
ELECTRICITY.

2. The everyday definition: "Electricity" means only

one thing: the electromagnetic field energy sent
out
by batteries and generators.
Examples: PRICE OF ELECTRICITY. KILOWATT-
HOURS OF ELECTRICITY.

4
3. The grade-school definition: "Electricity" means
only one thing: it refers to the flowing motion of
electric charge.
Examples: "CURRENT" ELECTRICITY. AMPERES
OF ELECTRICITY.

4. "Electricity" means only one thing: it refers to

the amount of imbalance between quantities of
electrons and protons.
Example: "STATIC" ELECTRICITY. DISCHARGE
OF ELECTRICITY.

5. "Electricity" is nothing other than the classes of

phenomena involving electric charges.
Examples: BIOELECTRICITY, PIEZOELECTRICITY,
TRIBOELECTRICITY, THERMOELECTRICITY,
ATMOSPHERIC ELECTRICITY ...ETC.

6. Other less common definitions:

"Electricity" refers to the flowing motion of
electrical energy (electric power, Watts of
electricity)
"Electricity" really means the electric potential
or e-field (Volts of electricity)
"Electricity" only means the glowing
nitrogen/oxygen plasma (sparks of electricity)
"Electricity" is nothing but a field of science
(Basic Electricity, Advanced Electricity)

Causes of Wastage of
Electricity
Electricity has reached to every nook and corner of
the world and has become an essential part of our
daily life. Electricity is a form of energy which can
be created from coal, oil, nuclear energy, solar
energy, etc. With the increase in the demand of
energy, there is also an increase in the cost of it.
Also the production of electricity is harmful to the
environment as it tends to damage the ecosystem
by polluting the air, water, plant life, soil, etc. If one
wishes to cut down on the expenses or wishes to
save the environment from getting polluted,
conservation electricity is a must. Conserving
electricity, even when done on a smaller scale like
that in the house, can help a great deal. Let us

6
take a look at some facts on electricity
consumption and conservation in the houses

CAUSES OF WASTAGE OF ELECTRICITY

• In more than half homes all

across the world, lighting
accounts up to 15% of the
electricity bill.
• If every household installs one
energy saving light bulb, it can
lead to considerable energy
saving and also prevent carbon
emission to a great extent.
• Many household appliances like
big screen televisions,
incandescent lamps utilize
maximum energy but can be
substituted for other options.
• In larger homes, refrigerators
and air conditioners consume as
much electricity as that required
by an entire office.
• Old household appliances like
refrigerators, water heater and
boilers utilize more energy than
the newer ones.

7
Save Electricity –
Switch to Alternative
Energy Now and
Perform Your Duty of
An Electricity Saver!
Do we realize that each time we switch on the air-
conditioner or anything that runs on electricity we

8
are destroying part of nature? With a flick of the
switch, every watt we burn we pay the bill to the
utility company our responsibility ends. How many
of us realize actually perform our role of electricity
saver? Electricity is generated for domestic
consumption in thermal power plants, hydel or
hydroelectric generation and to a very small extent
in nuclear power plants. Major environmental
damage is caused in these traditional processes
both in terms of their setting up, generation,
effluent disposal and in building the power
distribution of network or grid. With the depletion
of fossil fuels from coal to petroleum, the planet
will be devoid of these scarce resources in a few
100 years. The rate of usage is far more than the
rate of replenishment. Electricity saving can be
done by reducing wastage of electricity, using
electricity savers or energy saving devices and
energy efficient gadgets e.g . . . . However, this has
a limited impact. Therefore the focus has shifted to
alternative energy. The real electricity saver is
when we shift the source of electricity to solar
energy. Solar panels harness the power of the sun
and it is never depleted.
The sun has the capacity to provide over a
thousand times the global energy requirements.
Yet, we only use .02% of our energy requirements
from this source. These can be the electricity
savers in true sense. While there is a time
consuming shift to alternate energy several

9
electricity saver tools can be used. Energy saving
bulbs, solar powered lamps, solar powered cars,
solar heaters, and solar cars are some ways where
electricity savings can be achieved. Solar energy is
not available at nigh however, in certain locations
wind energy is a better alternative. Also, several
energy saving and conserving techniques have
been discovered. Solar One and Solar Two
technologies are the most common methods of
conserving solar power. Solar energy saving can be
achieved at high temperatures through molten
salts. Off – grid PV systems are also used as
electricity savers. A qualitative method used for
electricity saving is by analyzing usage patterns
one can shift peak power usage to off-peak. Major
moves have been made by the Federal
Government in is budget to focus on electricity
saver strategies. From tax breaks to research, the
government is serious in bringing about electricity
saving. Energy saving or electricity saving has
become a focal point for several Governments
worldwide. The tariff structure of most commercial
utility companies reflects this. This has become a
real tool as an efficient electricity saver. While a
low base rate is kept for the low-end user, the per
unit rate has a steep rise once the slab or threshold
is crossed. This acts as a deterrent to consumers
and thereby saves electricity significantly. The
focus on energy saving and electricity saving in
Government policies is best appreciated when we

10
look at President Obama’s pledge to spend over
USD 150 billion over ten years to develop
alternative energy. The cost of generating solar
power is relatively cheaper than traditional
electricity. So this could be the best and most
efficient strategy which can act as an electricity
saver. However, even at small level, we can help in
saving energy. If we reduce the use of electricity
and avoid it wastage as much as possible then we
can become not only a good electricity saver but
also an environment saver! After all, Energy saved
is environment saved!

11
Remedies! Can We
Stop Wastage of
Electricity?
12
Most of the electricity is generated from coal,
which is a fossil fuel and causes atmospheric
pollution. A few small changes will help you reduce
your monthly electricity bill.
1. Switch off all electrical devices when they are
not in use. Make it a habit to switch off the fan and
tube light when you leave a room.
2. Replace all bulbs with CFL lamps which consume
less electricity.
3. Watch less TV. Spend the time exercising or take
a walk. It is also better for your health.
4. Instead of using a geyser try to install a solar
water heater. Your electricity consumption will
reduce and you may get discounts on your
electricity bill and property tax bill.
5. Switch off your computer when not in use. A
CRT monitor account for more than 60% of the
total energy consumption of the computer. If
a screensaver is installed, electricity is consumed
even when you are working on the computer. An
LCD monitor consumes less power than a CRT
monitor.
6. Select home appliances carefully. The electricity
consumption of a frost free refrigerator is almost
50% more than that of a non-frost free
refrigerator. Do not open the refrigerator door
often, since this will increase the cooling
requirement and electricity consumption. Set the
temperature setting knob in the refrigerator at
medium.

13
Check the functioning of the refrigerator
regularly. If there is a problem with the compressor
or the refrigerant gas (usually freon) starts leaking,
your electricity bill will double. If the refrigerant
starts leaking , the refrigerator will smell. Get a
new refrigerator , since repairs are expensive and
there is no guarantee.
7. Install an air conditioner only if it is essential. In
most coastal areas, the sea breeze provides
natural cooling. Switch on the air conditioner only
when temperatures are high and set the air
conditioner temperature to 26 deg. C. The lower
the temperature, the higher the electricity
consumption. Start the air conditioner an hour
after starting work and shut off an hour before
ending work.
8. If your electricity bill has increased suddenly
without any reason, you can request the power
utility to check the electric meter. Mahadiscom
(formerly MSEB) will check your electric meter for
free, you have to give a written application to the
nearest office.

Interview with an EB
officer
ME: GOOD MORNING SIR! YOUR GOOD NAME PLEASE.
EB OFFICER: I AM RAMESH.
ME: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT TODAYS USAGE OF
ELECTRICITY?
EB OFFICER: I THINK NOW-A-DAYS PEOPLE WASTE
ELECTRICITY………………….
ME: WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “WATSE ELECTRICITY”?
EB OFFICER: A 100 WATT LIGHT BULB BURNING IN THE
ATTIC 24/7 IS WASTE, IF YOU ASK ME. LIKE THIS THEY
USE UNWANTED BULBS THINKING THAT IT DECORATES
THE HOUSE. BUT THEY ARE WRONG THEY ARE
DESTROYING THEMSELVES………
ME: BUT WE DO NEED BULBS, RIGHT?
EB OFFICER: I DIDN’T SAY DON’T USE BULBS. I SAID
DON’T USE IT UNNESCESSARILY!
ME: YOU MEAN THAT WE SHOULD REDUCE ELECTRICAL
CONSUMPTION.
EB OFFICER: YEAH……. EXACTLY

15
ME: HOW CAN WE REDUCE ELECTRICAL CONSUMPTION?
EB OFFICER: THERE IS LOTS OF WAYS…………..
ME: LIKE???????????
EB OFFICER: USE 60 WATT BULBS INSTEAD OF 100 WATT
BULBS……………………... USE A FLASHLIGHT INSTEAD OF
BULBS…………………………..
USE A GAS HOT WATER HEATER INSTEAD OF
ELECTRIC………………..
RAISE YOUR AC THERMOSTAT 10
DEGREES…………………..
USE LED BULBS……………………….
ME: SIR YOU SAY THAT WE SHOULD NOT WASTE
ELECTRICITY BUT WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF SUCH
WASTAGE??????????????
EB OFFICER: AS I SAID
TECHNOLOGY…………………………….
ME: SIR WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING AS AN
ADVICE TO THE YOUTH GENERATION?
EB OFFICER: YES, OF COURSE. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO
CAN CHANGE THE WORLD. REMEMBER AND ACT
ACCORDING TO “ENERGY CONSERVATION IS THE
FOUNDATION OF ENERGY INDEPENDENCE.”
ME: IT WAS GREAT TALKING TO YOU. THANK YOU FOR
SCHEDULING YOUR VALUABLE TIME FOR ME.
EB OFFICER: THANK YOU.
