INTRODUCTION

 Adi Godrej is one of the icons of Indian Industry. He is the present chairman
of Godrej Group of companies.
 Adi Godrej was born in a business family. His father's name was Burjorji
Godrej and his mother's name was Jai Godrej.
 More than a century age, the Godrej were into manufacturing locks and
vegetable-based soaps.
 The Godrej products were among the first indigenously manufactured
products to displace deep-rooted foreign brands.
EDUCATION
 Adi Godrej left India at the age of 17 to enroll at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received
his Bachelor and Master degrees in Management from
the Sloan School in 1963.
 After his return to India, Adi Godrej joined the family
business. He modernized and systematized
management structures and implemented process
improvements.
 Adi Godrej took the Godrej Group to great height
during controlled economy era.
 After the liberalization process, Adi Godrej restructured
company's policies to meet the challenges of globalisation.
In the early 2000s, the Group completed a 10-year
restructuring process through which each business became
a stand-alone company with a CEO from outside the Godrej
family.

 Now, Godrej group is a major market player in the cosmetic

industry with Godrej hair colour holding 40 per cent share
in the domestic hair dye market. The Group also is known
for almirahs, furniture, locks and safety vaults.
MESSAGE TO STUDENTS
 Firstly, for any individual to graduate from a good
educational institution is essential, the critical
question being how many of them transform
themselves into Passionate Leaders.
 Secondly, the leader, according to him, should be
truthful. He should have clear vision and constant
exposure to new ideas.
 He should neither lend his ears to somebody who is
apprehensive of taking risks nor to that internal voice
of fear which says that there are smarter, taller,
luckier and more powerful people than him.
 Thirdly, the leader should play to win. Fourthly, he
should learn to pick himself up after falling, make
vocation his vacation, enjoy what he does and grab
opportunities.

 According to Mr. Godrej, a very important ingredient

in any team today is the need to be creative. Too
much of discipline reduces creativity. Some degree of
"madness" is essential to stir the company and
expose it to revolutionary ideas.
ADI GODREJ: MIDDLE CLASS
BILLIONAIRE
 Godrej has middle class values, courtesy his mother
who was a schoolteacher and taught him "the greatest
lesson -- humility", but believes in living life king-size.
That explains his visit to 75 countries all around the
world (Rio de Janeiro in Brazil remains an all-time
favorite) and he makes it a point to go on extensive
sightseeing even on official tours.

 At the age of 62, he spends his Sundays on the

Arabian Sea alternately with a jet ski and a speedboat
and two years ago, he went to Mount Kailash -- a 42-
km trek going up to altitudes of 19,000 feet, within a
day.
VALUE OF MONEY
 The money was generous but the condition was that
they have to manage within the budget. He picked up
the practice from his mother, who, he says, could
have spent her life in the lap of luxury without doing
anything, but chose to remain a teacher at one of the
Godrej schools all her life.
 He also remembers how his mother put him on an
allowance since he was 10. He says,"Within that, I
had to buy my own clothes, textbooks, toys, school
fees, gifts. . . Everything ”.
 This early budgeting experience has taught him to
understand why money should not be wasted.
HISTORY OF GODREJ COMPANY
 Established in 1897, the Godrej group has grown in India
from the days of the charkha to nights at the call centers.
 Our founder, Ardeshir Godrej, lawyer-turned-locksmith,

could see the spark in the future.
