Screencast Reflection Paper

Title of Screencast: Using PowerPoint with Authorstream

URL: http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/c6XX316ao

Intended Audience: The audience of this screencast is specifically the teachers at Jeff Davis
Primary School, although the content could easily be extended to teachers at any level.

Screencasting Software: Screencast-O-Matic

Goals: There are several related goals for this screencast. One goal is to show the teachers that
Authorstream can actually be of practical use. This is taken care of through the narration which
talks about the ways this could help students who have missed school and as a way for students
to study outside of class. The second goal is to show teachers how to create a PowerPoint that
is tailored for being viewed through Authorstream, especially taking into consideration the fact
that the teacher won’t be there to narrate the presentation in this format. Finally, it is to show
the teachers how to use Authorstream.

Description: There are three sections to this screencast. First, I talk about how this can be a
useful service. Second, I demonstrate how to add audio narration which may be important for
an online version of a PowerPoint, and finally I demonstrate how to upload a file to
Authorstream and use the resulting video file.

Reflection: This screencast could be used as an online resource for teachers who were
interested in using Authorstream. Ideally, it would be used in part of a larger online lesson that
would include step-by-step instructions for uploading a file and design tips to save for later use.
One major advantage to this method is the fact that the viewer sees exactly what is on the
screen. It’s almost exactly like having the instructor standing over your shoulder showing you
the process on your computer. The drawback is that because the instructor isn’t actually there,
questions cannot be asked and answered in real time. The advantage is that the viewer has
more freedom in when and where they learn about the process.
