As of the 2008 Games, 11 of India's 17 Olympic medals have been won by the men's field

hockey team (8 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). Individual medals have been won by:

2004: Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore - Silver in Shooting

2000: Karnam Malleswari - Bronze in weightlifting
1996: Leander Peas - Bronze in tennis
1952: Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav - Bronze in Wrestling
1900: Norman Pritchard - Silver in 200 meter dash and silver in 200 meter hurdles

India is remarkable among nations for having won very few Olympic medals despite a
population exceeding a billion, around half of them under the age of 25. Numerous explanations
have been offered for the mainly the predominance of cricket and other cultural factors.[1][2][3][4]

According to several informal statistics, India is the country in the world with the lowest number
of total Olympic medals per capita (of those countries that have actually won at least one medal).
