A small 「つ」 is inserted between two characters to carry the consonant sound of the second character to the end of
the first。When you put つ between は and ぱ, the /p/ sound will be carried back to the end of the first character to
produce “happa” [はつぱ]。

Vowel sounds can be extended by adding あ to /a/, い to /i/e/ and う to /u/o/.
