THERMAL ENGINEERING LABORATORYDETERMINATION OF VISCOSITY USING REDWOOD’S
VISCOMETER
Aim _
To determine the Viscosity of the given oil using Redwood’s viscometer
Apparatus required
Redwood’s viscometer, Thermometer, Stopwatch & 50 ml beaker
Formulae used
‘+ Kinematic viscosity = At — B/t centistroke
For t= 40-80 sec, A = 0.264, B= 190
For t = 85-200 sec, A = 0.247, B = 65
t= redwood’s seconds
+ Dynamic viscosity = Kinematic viscosity of oil x density of oi
Specific gravity of oil = 0.865
Procedure
1. First room temperature and specific gravity of oil is noted
Time taken for 5¢ ml of oil is calculated and noted at room temperature
2
3. Then the temperature of the oil is increased in step of 5 “c
4. Time taken for 50 ml of oil collection is noted for corresponding temperature

Apparatus required
Cleve land open web tester,, Thermometers, Auto transformer & Burner
Procedure
1. At first oil sample is filled in the apparatus
.. Thermometer is placed in the position.
Using the auto transformer, the temperature of the oil sample is raised
|. Using the blazes of the flame, it is swayed to and fro above the fuel ignition
‘The temperature at which the fuel gets flashing, Note it as the flash point
‘The temperature at which the fuel gets fired is the fire point and it is noted
