5 -What is a computer ?
- Computers are electronic machines which can accept data in a certain form ,
process the data and give the results of the processing in a specified format as
information .
First, data in into the computer’s memory. Then, when the program is run, the
computer perform a set of instructions and processes the data. Finally, we can see
the results (the output) on the scree or in printed form ( see the diagram below ).
7 - What is Software ?
8 - What is hardware ?
CPU stand for Central Processing Unit. Its function is to execute program
instructions and coordinate the activities of all the other units. and the brain of the
computer

10 - What are the” peripheral devices”?
Storage devices are the physical units attached to the computer , they include
storage devices and input/output devices .
12 - What are the functions of” input devices” and” output devices” ?
- the functions of input devices : they enable data to go into the computer’s
memory. They most common input devices are the mouse and the keyboard
- the functions of output devices : they enable us to extract the finished product
from the system. For example, the computer shows the output on the monitor or
prints the results onto paper by means of the printer
13 - What is monitor ?
14 - What is port ?
16 - What is mouse ?
- a mouse is a small device that is moved by hand across a surface to control the
movement of the cursor on a computer screen
- hard disk is a disk inside a coputer that stores data and programs
Its main function : hard disk provide permanent storage for both disks and
programs
- RAM stand for “random access memory” and is the working area of the
computer , that is, the basic location where the microprocessor stores the required
information
2
19 - What is the main function of the microprocessor ?
- the control unit , which examines the instructions in the user’s program ,
interprets each instruction and causes the circuits and rest of the components-disk
drives , monitor , etc.
- ALU stand for : “Arithmetic Local Unit “ its function : which performs mathematical
calculations (+ , -,etc.) and logical operations ( and , or , etc.)
- the registers, which are high-speed units of memory used to store and control
information
- ROM stand for : “read only memory” Its function : is permanent and contains
instructions needed by the processor
26 - What is a chip ?
- the main parts of the CPU : Control unit , ALU , Register Set
-ROM
30 - What is a megahertz ?
3
-megahertz is a unit for measuring the speed at which a computer operates
Optical disc drives are an integral part of stand-alone consumer appliances such as
CD players, DVD players and DVD recorders , they can store imformation at much
higher densities than magnetic disks
34 - What is a bit ?
-“ASSII” stand for : America Standard Code for Information Interchange. The
purpose of this code is to provide a standard system for the representation of
characters
-the function of the mouse buttons: the mouse buttons are used to select and move
items on the screen , such as text, icons, picture, etc.
-the functions of “cache” : provides extremely fast access for sections of a program
and its data
- the hertz, or Hz
4
40 - What does LCD stand for ?
-Ink-jet: Non-impact print; projects ink droplets onto paper; some ink-jets produce
high quality results; quite fast, silent
-laser: scans the image which a laser beam, uses special ink powder; very high
resolution; fast; scalable fonts and other advantages
-Thermal: uses heat, a special kind of paper and electrosensitive methods; silent;
some color models emulate HP plotters
-plotter: uses ink and fine pens to draw detailed designs paper
43 - What is access-time ?
- is the time it takes your read/write heads to find any particular record
5
48 - WHAT DOES MO stand for ?
-- Graphical user interface: a user interface based on graphics (icons and pictures
and menus) instead of text; uses a mouse as well as a keyboard as an input device.
-- there three platforms include similar features : a desktop with icon, windows, and
folder, a printer selector, a file finder, a control panel and various desk accessories.
–WYSIWYG stand for ‘what you see is that you get’. It means that your printout will
precisely match what you see on the screen.
57 – What is cell ?
– The intersection of a column and a row in a spreadsheet. A cell can hold three
types of information : text, numbers and formulas.
6
-- Formulas are functions or operations that add, subtract, multiply or divide existing
values to produce new values.
A database program can be used to store, organize and retrieve information of kind.
– Web browser is fetch and view web pages on the internet. The web is a
hypertext-based system where you can find news, pictures, games, online
shopping, virtual museums, and electronic magazines.
– HTML (hypertext markup language) is a set of commands that indicate how a web
page is formatted and displayed.
– IRC (internet relay chat) is a system for real-time (usually typed) conversation.

69 – What is “intranet” ?
7
– Intranet is like small version of the internet inside a company.
- With FPT software , you can copy programs , games , images and sound from
the hard disk of a remote computer to your hard disk .(or)
- FTP software is transfer files from the internet to your hard disk .
-computer animiationis the process of creating objects and pictures which move
across the screen
Function : Can offer imageset output , laser printer output , color laser printer
output , and event slide or film recorder output
80 - What is an assembler?
8
-an assembler is a special program which converts a program written in a low- level
language into machine code
