Unit 2 – The Individual in Society

The development of artistic style

Read the passage below and then answer the question which follows, using information and
knowledge of your own as well as the information given in the passage.

Life would be very boring without change. This is as true of the arts as of any other aspect of
human existence. One of the great joys of life is that each generation develops its own unique
style of art – whether it be in painting, sculpture, music, literature or any other creative areas. It is
interesting to speculate about the sort of works that a Mozart, Shakespeare or Michelangelo might
have created if they had lived in the twenty-first century. Instead, as people of their own time,
they created works of art that their contemporaries would understand and enjoy. In many ways it
is a bonus that the products of their genius survive and can be enjoyed today.

Question:
What different factors can influence change in the arts? In your answer you should refer to
change in one of art, or film, or music, or literature or drama. (or chose an another art form
you have studied).

Marking allocation – 20 marks in total

8 marks for - demonstrating relevant knowledge and understanding applied to a range of issues,
using skills from different disciplines

8 marks for - marshalling evidence and drawing conclusions: select, interpret, evaluate and
integrate information, data, concepts and opinions

 Selecting: showing how evidence helps to answer the question


 Interpreting: showing how evidence helps to answer the question
 Evaluating: assessing the strength of the evidence in support of the question
 Integrating: using evidence to develop a coherent argument/conclusion

4 marks for – communicating clearly and accurately in a concise, logical and relevant way

The question should be answered in essay format with an introduction, main body and a clear
conclusion.

Tip: It’s always good to start the last paragraph with the words, “In conclusion.....”
