About the Conference:
The Indian Penal Code, 1860 is the frst well thought-out, debated, comprehensive and
codified Criminal Law thatthe British Indian Administration ventured to enact primarily
for India and later extended to Singapore, Malaysia and other Asian countries, The fact that
even after one hundred and fifty years the Penal Code is still live and socially relevant
documents tselfan achievement and calls fora commemoration event. The models and
forms of such event may be varied but the spirit of such celebration are more or less
The National University of Singapore recently took the initiative in commemorating the
Penal Code by organizing a Symposium on June 9 to 11 on: A Model Indian Penal Code
adhering othe Philosophy of Macaulay. As the leading Law University of the country, the
National Law University, Delhi has resolved to celebrate the event by organizing National
Conference on Assessing the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Indian Penal Code 1860,
Ater One Hundred and Fifty Years of Enactment: A Commemoration Event,
The main panicipanis to this Conference would be the users of the Penal Cade, namely
the Police, the Prosecutors, the Judges, the Lawyers and the Criminal Law teachers and
students. The Conference will focus the themes in various sessions which will generate
lively discussions and contribute to policy formulation in various areas which are of
