Setup the Splice Cleanly cut off the rope ends you wish to join. Untwist the strands of each rope two or three wraps. Wrap. 2 thin strip of duct tape around the end of each strand to keep them from unraveling. Spread the strands ‘and butt the rope ends up against one anothor with the strands ofthe frst rope between the strands of the second rope. Start with the'frst rope and lay each strand counterclockwise over the top of the strand next toi from the second rope. 2 Splicing After laying the first strand over the top of the strand on its left, gently untwist the second rope and tuck the first strand under the next strand. Repeat the same over- and under-tuck with the other two strands {rom the first rope. When finished, the three strands from the first rope will be tucked under three strands ‘rom the second rope. Now start over. Take a strand from the frst rape, go over the strand next to it and Under the one after that. Repeat the over- and under-splicing until al the strands from the first rope are {ucked under strands from the second row a second time. f there is enough of the first rope strands lef, {tuck in another row the same way until most ofthe strands are spliced into the second rope... 3 Finishing ‘Now, start tucking the strands from the second rope over and under the strands of the first rope the same ‘way untl all the strands are tucked in. Untwist the frst rope to allow room to tuck the strands under as 1you did with the first rope. When you are done, secure the bits sticking out from between the strands to koep them from unraveling. To do that, wrap a thin strip of duct tape or thin cord around the ends to ‘Prevent unraveling. Pull the rope both directions to set the splice so it wll hold securely. Tho rope will be stronger atthe splice than the rest ofthe rope and the braided link will also look nice and doesmit make 2 fat wad of rope like most knots do. WIRE ROPE SPLICING 1. Take one end of the wire rope and make a loop around the thimble. Hold the tal of the wire rope (the doad ond) tightly pressed to the rest ofthe rope (the live end), so that the wire rope fits into the channel Of the thimble and the thimble does not fall out. You want atleast 12 inches of dead end extending past the closed end of the thimble, 2. Pinch the wire rope into the thimble channels tightly with your locking pliers, If need be, close the thimble @ bit with pressure from the pliers to make sure the splice loop formed in the wire rope is solidly hold by the thimble. 3, Remove the nuts off the bottom ends of the Crosby Bulldog Shackle and take ofthe saddle, The ‘saddle isthe thick metal crosspiece that goes over the two ends of the U. Place the U piece of the shackle over your wire rope so both the live and dead end are inside the U. You want the bend ofthe U. to rest on the dead end. Position this as close to the thimble as possible. Put the saddle back on the fonds of the U (with the smal, curved middle snug against the live end of the wire). Place the nuts back nthe end of the U and tighten with a crescent wrench, 4. Prepare another Crosby Shackle in the same manner and place it4 Inches away from the first shackle on the wire rope. Make sure that the bend of the U rests on the dead end only. Lock this shackle in place and install the third and last shackle near the end of the splice. Again, make sure the bbend of the U rests on the dead end only. 6. Pass the wire rope you want to splice to through the upper eyelet of the bottle neck screw. This eyelet will replace the thimble in the splice loop of this next piece of wire rope. Altach three Crosby Bulldogs to complete the splice loop just as you did to the other piece of wire.
