Personality is a broad, amorphous
designation relating to fundamental
approaches of persons to others and
themselves.
According to Gluck- “ Personality is a
pattern of stable states and characteristics
of person that influences his or her
behavior toward goal achievement.
Determinants of Personality
Biological Factors:
Heredity: It refers to those factors that were
determined at conception.
E .g: Physical stature, Facial attractiveness, sex,
temperament, muscle composition and
reflexes.
Brain: Better understanding of human
behavior and personality comes from a closer
study of brain.
Electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB) on
human subjects is just beginning.
Biofeedback: The individuals learns the
internal rhythms of a particular body process
such as hormonal secretions, fluctuations in
blood pressure through internal signals.
Physical Attributes: It has some impact on the
individuals personality. Personal
characteristics are not dictated by heredity
alone.
Cultural Factors
Attitudes towards independence, aggression,
competition, co operation etc.
Culture requires both conformity and
acceptance.
Family Factors
Direct influence of parents and siblings.
Identification process of a children is
measured in following perspectives:
Feelings and attitudes between child and
model.
Child’s motives or desire.
It is the process through which the child
actually takes on the attributes of the model.
Social Factors
This process is not confined to childhood.
Learns from family, group, peers and
especially organizations.
