TIA-568- B. 2 Addend u m 1 0, Petformance Specifications for 4-Pa ir 100D Augmented Category 6 Cabling

Herbert V. Congdon II, PE

Why Augmented Category 6?

• 10GBASE-T

- a completed appl icatio n stan dard

• 100m

- a defined distance in 568-B.1 networks

• Category 6: can't cover both witho ut mitig atio n (TS B-155)

• Category 6 E: can't cover both witho ut m itigatio n (6 E n ever defined)

• So, an augmented Category 6 specification is needed

Note: my friends call me "Cat 6A"!!

Specifications

• Category 6 (to 250 MHz) - Insertion loss

- NEXT loss

• Pair-to-pair

• Power sum

- ELFEXT and FEXT loss

• Augmented Category 6 (to 500 MHz) - Insertion loss

- NEXT loss and PSNEXT loss

Augmented Category 6 Testing

• Testing

- First - testing is not a requireme nt of the Standard • Often, 1 00% testing is required by the cl ie nt

- Seco nd - alie n crosstalk testing takes a lot of time • Measurement sampling proposed

- Third - testing specifications need to be specific and carefully documented

• Selectio n of tested links is critical

• Reme mber: you're testing today for applicatio ns in th e future

Status

• TIA TR-42.7

-Interim meeting in December completed second default ballot comment resolution

- Third default ballot closes February 3, 2008

• May allow release for publication that week during scheduled TR- 42 meetings

To understand the work in progress we must understand the basics of the J-STD-607-A

ANSI J-STO-607-A

• Specifies the requirements for a uniform teleco m munications grounding and bonding infrastructure

• Specified for com mercial buildings

• Systems for all forms of information: voice, data, video, environmental control, security, audio, etc.

Main Components

Grounding Equalizer: connects TBBs on the top floor and at least every third floor below

Telecommunications Grounding Busbar: the connection point for telecom systems and equipment in each TR or ER

ANSI J-STD-607-A

Specifies design requirements

• The TBBs should be continuous without splices

• The TBBs and GEs must be at least 6 AWG and should be sized up according to distance:

Up to 13 feet 14-20 feet 21-26 feet 27-33 feet 34-41 feet 42-52 feet 53-66 feet

6 AWG OD=stack of 4 dimes 4AWG

1 AWG OD of a pencil

1/0 AWG

2/0 AWG

Over 66 feet 3/0 AWG just fits in a garden hose

• Most runs will require large conductors

'. ,I ~ .rrI!'l "v.I'W, "~ . ~

ANSI J-STD-607-A Specifies design requirements

• The Bonding Conductor should be at least as big as the TBBs

• The conductors may be insulated or bare

• Water pipes should not be used as part of the bonding pathway (they may include plastic portions)

• Cable shields should not be used as part of the bonding pathway (they do not have sufficient circular mil area) though cable shields must be bonded to a TGB or the TMGB

• GEs are required if a building has multiple TBBs to provide bonding pathways to multiple TRs on each floor

ANSI J-STD-607-8 Why update?

• 607 -A ratified in 2002

• 607 -A standard doesn't define how to ground racks & cabinets

• specifies grounding up to the busbar

• Many manufacturers want to add more detailed information to standard

• Netvvorks more complex

• Netvvorks more sensitive to noise, etc.

ANSI J-STD-607-8 Standard Schedule

a_and"

• Work, to date, being done by conference call

• As of last week, scope changed back to original focus of commercial buildings

• Plan to reference other standards (i.e. TIA-942 for data centers; TIA-569 for pathways, etc)

• Next TIA meeting (early Feb) will announce launch of committee

• Working group is 42.3.1

• Under 42.3, Pathways & Spaces

• Completion date not specified • Too early in process

Summary

• ANSI J-STD-607-A

• Grounding & bonding system for commercial buildings

• Recommends components and installation practices

• Lacks detailed information for racks & cabinets • ANSI J-STD-607-8

• Early in development process

• Will be recognized as formal committee in Feb 2008

• Add information to ground and bond racks & cabinets

• Scope similar to 607-A

• Add references to other new standards (TIA-942, etc)

AN S lIE I AfT I A- 606- A standard.

RAPIDNET

RapidNet - the first copper and fiber pre-terminated system in a modular, easy to handle cassette.

TIA/EIA-606-8

606-A (Administration) was reaffirmed in June 2007 Extends it for up to five years, as is.

New Addendum 1 on Administration for Equipment Rooms, Computer Rooms and Data Centers

Ballot comment resolution completed in September February 2008 publication?

Opening 606-A document for review in anticipation of beginning a revision project that will ultimately produce TIAlEIA-606-8

1;While 606-A was reaffirmed~ the current project to produce an addendum to 606-A is due to data centers. The addendum is meant to reconcile 606-A with the TIA 's 942 data center standard~· 606-A did not really consider data centers and 942 did not consider administration. The two concepts will get together in Addendum 1 to 606-A (Eventually will become 606-B)

CHANGES FROM LAST REVISION

Adopts identification scheme specified in TIA-606-A Addendum 1

Creates new identification format for horizontal links, backbone cables and campus backbone cables as well as telecommunications outlets,

equ ip me nt outlets, splices, conso Ii datio n poi nts, and 0 utdoor

telecom m u nic atio ns spaces.

Administration of grounding and bonding systems.

Allows existing TIA-606-A identifier formats to continue to be used where they are already in use.
