Known as "The Spice of the
Caribbean," visitors will be enticed by
the sweet scents of nutmeg, cinnamon,
ginger and vanilla who is wafting in the
air. In fact, there are more spices in
Grenada
Grenada per square mile than anywhere
else on the planet. Nutmeg is the most
abundant spice, and Grenada produces
about a third of the world’s supply.
Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, is
known as the most picturesque city in
the Caribbean. Its horseshoe-shaped
harbour is surrounded by a pastel
rainbow who reflects on the red-tiled

roofs of traditional shops and homes.
Rich in English, French and West

with beautiful well-preserved examples
of French and British Colonial

As for cuisine, visitors can indulge in
some of the most exciting in the region,

are primarily of African, East-Indian
and European descent, with the largest
proportion of the population,
approximately 75%, of African descent.
Grenada is an English-speaking nation.
Music
With its African origins, Calypso is the
music of the native Grenadian. Though
the mini-buses now play reggae and
pop, it is still the music of choice at
Carnival time. Ex-tempore is an art
form where the musician sings to a
standard tune but has impromptu lyrics.
Ports of Entry
Visitors travel to Grenada by Sea and
Air. There are a variety of Cruise lines
which stop either in St. George's, in
Grenada or Hillsborough in Carriacou.
International flights stop at Point
Salines International Airport, and
visitors who continue have only a short
hop by inter-island charter to Lauriston
Airport in Carriacou.
Visitors who make their way down by
yacht have a variety of marinas at
which they can clear immigration and
customs as well as dock and purchase

 Underwater sculpture park
C reator of the world’s first
underwater sculpture park,
Jason de Caires Taylor has
gained international recognition for his
unique work. His sculptures highlight
ecological processes whilst exploring
the intricate relationships between
modern art and the environment. By
using sculptures to create artificial
reefs, the artist’s interventions promote
hope and recovery, and underline our
need to understand and protect the
natural world.
The sculptures are sited in clear
shallow waters to afford easy access by
divers, snorkellers and those in glass-
bottomed boats. Viewers are invited to
discover the beauty of our underwater
planet and to appreciate the processes
of reef evolution.
The Artworks
Jason de Caires Taylor’s underwater
sculptures create a unique, absorbing
and expansive visual seascape.
Highlighting natural ecological
processes Taylor’s interventions
explore the intricate relationships that
exist between art and environment. His
works become artificial reefs,
attracting marine life, while offering
the viewer privileged temporal
encounters, as the shifting sand of the
ocean floor, and the works change
from moment to moment.
Perspectives
The experience of being underwater is
vastly different from that of being on
land. There are physical and optical
considerations that must be taken into
account. Objects appear twenty five
percent larger underwater, and as a
consequence they also appear closer.
Colours alter as light is absorbed and
reflected at different rates, with the
depth of the water affecting this
further. The light source in water is
from the surface, this produces
kaleidoscopic effects governed by
water movement, currents and
turbulence. Water is a malleable
medium in which to travel enabling the
viewer to become active in their
engagement with the work. The large
number of angles and perspectives
from which the sculptures can be
viewed increase dramatically the
unique experience of encountering the
works.
The ocean is imbued with mystery.
Underwater and devoid of white walls
the viewer is unrestrained in their
interaction with the work. Buoyancy
and weightlessness enable a detached
physical experience, encouraging
encounters that are perceptual and
personal. As time passes and the works
change, they reshape and redefine the
underwater landscape in unpredictable
ways.
Vicissitudes
Vicissitudes depicts a circle of figures,
all linked through holding hands.
These are life-size casts taken from a
group of children of diverse ethnic
background. Circular in structure and
located five meters below the surface,
the work both withstands strong
currents and replicates one of the
primary geometric shapes, evoking
ideas of unity and continuum.
The underwater environment is much
like that of the outdoors. An object is
subject to changes in light and
prevailing weather conditions. The
cement finish and chemical
composition of Vicissitudes actively
promotes the colonisation of coral and
marine life. The figures are
transformed over time by their
environment, and conversely as this
happens so they change the shape of
their habitat. This natural process
echoes the changes exacted through
growing up. Social interchange shapes
this process, while conversely as the
product of a particular society we in
turn invoke change on the workings
and dynamics of that environment.
The sculpture proposes growth,
chance, and natural transformation. It
shows how time and environment
impact on
and shape the physical body. Children
by nature are adaptive to their
surroundings. Their use within the
work highlights the importance of
creating a sustainable and well-
managed environment, a space for
future generations. Taylor notes that
close to forty percent of coral reefs
worldwide has been destroyed and that
this figure is set to increase. His work
reminds us that the marine
environment is in a constant state of
flux, and that this in turn reflects
poignantly the vicissitudes, changing
landscapes, of our own lives.
The Lost Correspondent
The Lost Correspondent depicts a man
sitting at a desk with a typewriter. The
desk is covered with a collection of
newspaper articles and cuttings that
date back to the 1970s. Many of these
have political significance, a number
detail Grenada’s alignment with Cuba
in the period immediately prior to the
revolution. The work informs the rapid
changes in communication between
generations. Taking the form of a
traditional correspondent, the lone
figure becomes little more than a relic,
a fossil in a lost world.
Grace Reef
Grace Reef is a series of sixteen
figures each cast from the body of a
Grenadian woman. Located across an
expansive underwater area the work
draws marine life to an area that has
suffered substantial decimation
through sustained storm damage. The
work reflects the continuing evolution
of the island and its people, revealing
itself in dramatic and dynamic ways.
The direction and strengths of currents
mean that entire sections of the work
become covered, hidden and lost.
Sienna
A character from Jacob Ross’ short
story, A Different Ocean from the book
A Way to Catch the Dust (1999) Sienna
is a young girl gifted in free diving. The
story follows friendship and betrayal as
her talent is exploited in the search for
lost treasure. Taylor’s work Sienna
takes its lead from this story. It’s metal
structure allows water currents to flow
through the body of the sculpture
creating an ideal habitat for filter
feeding organisms. As the process of
colonisation accelerates so Sienna
gains physical substance. The work is
ultimately created by the organisms
that inhabit it, in the same way that a
character in a book is given substance
and temperament by the person
reading it.
La Diablesse
La Diablesse was commissioned
through the Grenadian Board of
Tourism. It celebrates the longstanding
traditions of Caribbean story-telling
and folklore. The term La Diablesse is
taken from the French for She-Devil. A
well-known character within
Grenadian literature she has a face
that is corpse-like, and a head half-
hidden under a wide brimmed hat. She
appears in all white with a long
flowing dress to hide her cloven foot or
hoof (the other foot is perfectly
normal). Despised by women, she is
known for enchanting men before
leading them to a violent death.
Caribbean myth also foretells that if a
woman dies during childbirth she will
return as La Diablesse.
Located deep underwater within a
labyrinthine formation of coral, the
sculpture emerges suddenly and
unexpectedly, creating an abrupt and
unsuspecting point of encounter.
The Un-Still Life
Un-Still Life mirrors the classical
composition of traditional still life
tableaux. On a table is an arrangement
of cement objects, a vase, bowl and
fruit. In contrast to established ideas of
stasis the work is perpetually changing,
remaining a work in progress as layers
build on its surface. This accumulated
colonisation of coral becomes a
physical equivalent to conventional
mark making of drawing and painting.
The work reflects the time-based
observation associated with the
classical study of still life composition.
It reminds us that changes are
inevitable.
Future processes
In the future, Taylor wants to produce
the structures for sculptures in London
and then transport them to the site.
“Then all I have to do is cast the
cement”, he said. “The reef ball is a
verry clever design. You cast cement
around the ball and then deflate the
ball leaving the cement from”.
Taylor said “ It is amazing to start an
idea, something small, and then realize
how it evolves”. In the beginning an
artist wants to put something
underwater. Then he realise that need cleaning the sculpturea or bringing
an engineer to work out how to do this them back up to the surface for
and then an underwater photographer maintenance. Eventually, they will
to make known his work. disappear”, said he.
Taylor does not aim for new venues for
his work or to exhibit in galleries. “
For me, is all about the future”, he
said, “ I have some great ideas that I
want to try. For instance, I would like
to incorporate a shipwreck into an
underwater sculpture park, and make it
look like a Noah’s ark with figures
around it”. Taylor wants to challenge
to use of materials and work modern in
a way that makes them look like parth
of an archeological dig, combining
glass into sculptures so one can see
through the piece and light can shine
through the work. He said, he wants to
build a Sushi restaurant underwater
with living fish moving through it.
“There are a lot of subtleties of
life with cement … a lot of development
goes on. It’s not always resolute. I have
a vague idea of what I want to try to
achieve. I wanted to do a really
abstract symbol, and started looking at
a man sitting on a cheir and reading,
watching Tv and drinking coffee at a
table. The still life is about moments in
time” Taylor wants to allow the
sculptures to be part of creating a
vibrant varied habitat. I am not into

 I think Jason Taylor had a brilliant
idea, with an enormous
development potential of the
aquatic ecosystem and especially the
tourist industry which isn’t more
expensive than planning a tourist
resort with everything that involves it.

Also the message itself is a great one

because it promote hope, rehabilitation
and protection of the natural
environment which today is
increasingly necessary because of
excessive industrialization in the world.

I think this great idea should be taken,

and developed all over the world,
because can not be anything better
than to contribute to the development
of coral reefs, to protect the natural
environment and not least the
development of tourism.

viata marina. Figurile sunt
transformate in timp de mediul lor iar
aceasta transformare schimba forma
habitatului subacvatic. Acest process
natural reflecta schimbarile ce apar
odata cu trecerea timpului.
Sculptura propune crestere, sansa si
transformare naturala. Acestea arata
care este impactul timpului si al
mediului inconjurator asupra formei
fizice a corpului. Copii, prin natura lor
sunt adaptabili imprejurarilor.
Utilizarea acestora in cadrul lucrarilor

La Diablesse
La Diablesse a fost comandata prin
Consiliul Grenadian de Turism. . Ea a
fost ridicata in cinstea traditiilor
Caraibene de demult, a legendelor si a
folclorului. Termenul de “La
Diablesse” provine din limba franceza
si inseamna “Diavolita”. Un
binecunoscut caracter in literatura
Grenadiana. Ea are o fata ca de
cadavru, şi un cap pe jumătate ascuns
sub o pălărie largă. Apare tota in alb,
cu o rochie lunga curgatoare pentru a-
si ascunde piciorul despicat sau copita
(celalalt picior este perfect normal).
Dispretuita de catre femei, ea este
cunoscuta pentru felul in care ii
incanta pe barbati inainte de a le cauza
o moarte violenta. Un mit Caraibian
prezice deasemenea ca daca o femeie
moare in timp ce aduce pe lume un
copil, ea se va intoarce ca “La
Diablesse”. Localizata in adancul
subacvatic, inauntrul unei formatiuni
de corali, sculptura apare brusc si
neasteptat, creaind un abrupt si
nebanuit punct de intalnire.
Natura vie
Natura vie oglindeste compozitia
clasica a tablourilor traditionale de
natura moarta. Pe o masa se afla un
aranjament de obiecte de ciment, o
vaza, un bol si fructe. In contrast cu
idei inradacinate de imortalizare,
munca este in permanenta schimbare,
ramanand activitati in derulare cum ar
fi straturi adaugate pe suprafata
acesteia. Colonia de coral acumulata
pe suprafata acesteia devine un

Viitoare proiecte
In viitor, Taylor vrea sa produca
structurile pentru statui in Londra apoi
sa le transporte unde el doreste. “Apoi
tot ceea ce trebuie sa fac este sa
modelez cimentul”, a spus el.
“Cocolosul de recif este un design
foarte intelligent. Poti cimenta
imprejurul mingii si apoi desumfa
mingea lasad cimenutul din ea”.
Taylor a spus, “A fost minunat sa incep
o idee, ceva mic, si apoi sa realizez cat
a evoluat”. La inceput un artist a vrut
sa puna ceva sub apa. Apoi el a
realizat ca are nevoie e un inginer
pentru a afla cum poate face asta iar
apoi de un fotograf subacvatic pentru
a-si face cunoscuta lucrarea.
Taylor nu urmarea crearea unor noi
locuri de munca sau expunerea
lucrarilor sale in galerii pentru a fi
criticate. “Pentru mine, totul se leaga
de viitor”, a spus el “Am niste idei
minunate pe care as vrea sa le incerc.
Pentru moment as vrea sa incorporez o
nava naufragiata intr-un parc de
sculpturi subacvatic, si sa il fac sa
arate ca Arca lui Noe cu figuri de jur-
imprejurul ei” Taylor vrea sa incerce
sa foloseasca materiale si mana de
lucru moderne, intr-un mod care sa le
faca sa arate ca facand parte dintr-o
sapatura arheologica, combinand
sticla in constructia sculpturilor pentru
a putea vedea prin ele si pentru ca
lumina sa poata straucii prin lucrare.
El a spus deasemenea ca vrea sa
construiasca un restaurant chinezesc
sub apa unde pesii vii sa se pot misca
prin el.

Exista multe subtilitati ale vietii cu

cimentul ... are loc o mare activitate
de elaborare. Nu este totdeauna
concludenta. Am o vaga idée despre ce
doresc sa indeplinesc. Am dorit sa
realizez un simbol cu adevarat abstract
si am inceput prin a urmari un barbat
sezand pe un scaun si citind, privind la
televizor si band cafea la masa.
Natura moarta se refera la un moment
din viata “Taylor doreste sa permita
sculpturilor sa fie parte integrala a
unui habitat vibrant si variat. Eu nu
curat sculpturile, nici nu le aduc la
suprafata pentru intretinere. In cele din
urma, acestea vor disparea”, a spus
acesta.
