Background of the Study

CASSAVA (Manihot esculenta) STARCH AS AN

EFFECTIVE COMPONENT FOR IDEAL
BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC

The world has experienced temperature spikes brought about by climate change. It has
been observed that warming is experienced most in the northern and southern regions of every
country. One of the leading causes of climate change is making synthetic plastics out of oil that
stores carbon, and when this synthetic biodegradable plastic degrades, it means more carbon
dioxide is released to the atmosphere. (www.biotecharticles.com)

Biodegradable plastics prevent climate change and lessening carbon dioxide emissions.
Biodegradable plastics made from natural sources would take carbon from the atmosphere and
store it. This would be released to the atmosphere when the plastic degrades, but there is no
addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. (www.biotecharticles.com)

Cassava plant is known to create an ideal biodegradable plastic. However, inventions

have evolved and continue to evolve until several years of study, research and experimentation
reach great developments. They will improvise this study by adding some components to cassava
starch in order to make another revision of biodegradable plastic.

Their aim is to make revisions to cassava starch as an effective component for ideal
biodegradable plastic. And also to help minimize Earth’s climate change.
