• They must be nontoxic and acceptable to
regulatory agencies
• They must be commercially available
• Their cost must be acceptably low
• They must not be contraindicated in any
segment of population. e.g. sucrose,
sodium etc.
• They must be physiologically inert

stable
• Free from unacceptable
microbiological load
• They must be color compatible (not
produce any off-color appearance)
