Old Yeller Book Review

The story is about friendship and to learn to love as

well as to be forgiving. The main characters are Old Yeller

a stray Labrador and a thieving rascal but also brave and

loving, Travis a boy who learns to act like a man, and

Little Arliss who teaches Travis to forgive and forget. The

characters are very credible because they have real feelings

and by the way they acted they were practically there.

In the story Travis finds Old Yeller stealing food and

he gets bad first impression. His brother, Little

Arliss loves Old Yeller and is as much of a

troublemaker as he is. Travis learns to love Old Yeller

after he saves Little Arliss from a bear, Travis from

killer hogs, and the family from a vicious pack of

wolves. Travis takes care of the family while his papa

is gone but he can’t save everyone. Through the story

many things such as wild bullfights and illnesses like

hydrophobia that they strive to overcome as a family.

My favorite character is Old Yeller because he wouldn’t

back down if it meant saving his family. I think I

could relate to Little Arliss because I like drawing

outside the lines and having a good time. I would say

that I have felt angry like Little Arliss before in the

case when someone tells you that you have to do

something and that’s the only thing you can do.

I absolutely loved the book. I think it is now one of

my all time favorites because it is real. There isn’t

anything fake or silly about it. My favorite part of

the book was probably the first time Travis began to

love Old Yeller. He hugged him and petted him and

bathed him. It was such a sweet moment. Of course my

least favorite part was when Old Yeller died. It was

harder for me because I put myself in Travis’s place. I

wouldn’t change anything in the book because I strongly

believe that things happen for a reason and if the

author put it in there then it’s meant to be there to

read.

I would strongly recommend this book because it is

a book that teaches you a lesson of love and it is

real. Everything about it makes it real. The author

makes you feel like you’re there. When they were joyful

then I was joyful, when they were sad I was sad with

them. I think any person would like this book. It’s a

book for anyone who loves animals and love itself.
